Rangers have decided against signing Salim Kerkar after his former club, Gueugnon, demanded £300,000 for the French-Algerian winger.

The 23-year-old impressed on trial with the Scottish champions.

But Rangers manager Walter Smith said: "We can't get a decision from Fifa in terms of compensation.

"Gueugnon have released him, but they are still claiming compensation. So, while this situation remains the same, we won't be taking him."

Kerkar left the French third-tier club in the summer and Rangers had hoped to complete the move in September.

He returned to Gueugnon earlier this month in an attempt to resolve the problem with his former club, who say they are due compensation because of his age.

But Rangers, who say they were under the impression that the midfielder was a free agent, have announced that they have pulled out of the deal.
