Neil Lennon has expressed his fears that Aiden McGeady wants to leave Celtic before the close of the transfer window.

McGeady has regularly been linked with a move to the English Premier League and his omission from Celtic's tour to North America has fuelled speculation about his future.

Bhoys boss Lennon insists the winger is not involved in the trip due to injury, but acknowledged the Republic of Ireland has intimated a wish to join another club.

"Aiden hasn't said to me he wants to leave in so many words," said Lennon in the Daily Record. "But that vibe came from his side of things.

Conspiracy theories

"I know there are conspiracy theories, but it is a genuine injury. He picked it up in a bounce game on Saturday behind closed doors. He came off and was feeling sore.

"We left it until Sunday to see if it settled, and it didn't, so we felt that if we were looking at 10 days, the travelling would make it worse.

"He had a scan on Monday, but it was pointless bringing him here if he wasn't going to train and play."

I'm sorry to say, I do think he will be off, I just hope we get what he is worth

I really hope wee Aiden stays, but if we get offers in the £10m mark, I think we should let him go  Cry

If Aiden left for a fair price, then we certainly wouldn't have any money-worries the now. But we'd be losing a major midfield asset.

I hope that Lawwell and Lenny keep him at Paradise, but as Paddy says - he'll go if we get a decent offer and the bhoy agrees terms.

Of all our transfer in and outs, this is the one that I'm most interested in.

Martin O'Neill full of praise for Aiden McGeady

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/8846452.stm

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has reiterated his admiration for Celtic's Aiden McGeady, while carefully refusing to be drawn on his signing plans.

"I think Aiden McGeady has the ability to play in the Premier League, without question," said O'Neill.

"I had him as a kid at Celtic and played him without worrying too much about his youth.

"He played against AC Milan one night in the Champions League at Celtic Park and he was absolutely fantastic."

O'Neill was speaking in Dublin, where Villa will be based for a four-day training camp.

And he was quizzed about speculation linking him to the Republic of Ireland international trio of McGeady, Robbie Keane and Stephen Ireland.

"We have been linked with an awful lot of players and I would expect that because we are a top quality Premier League side," added O'Neill, who has admitted he is prepared to sell England midfielder James Milner.

"There's no point in me mentioning names but, without wanting to lose players of the calibre of Milner, we would want to try to recruit some players.

"But, as the chairman said at the back end of last season, it's probably going to be a case of having to sell to buy and that's something I'm delving into at the moment."

McGeady has three years of his contract to run at Celtic and Spartak Moscow were told the 24-year-old was not for sale when the Russians made an enquiry in early June.

And Aston Villa's fierce rivals Birmingham had an approach for the winger rejected in January.

However, Celtic boss Neil Lennon said last week that he thought the player was keen on a move away from Glasgow.

"Aiden hasn't said to me he wants to leave in so many words," revealed Lennon. "But that vibe came from his side of things."

Villa skipper Richard Dunne, an international team-mate of McGeady, is also a fan of the Celtic star.

"I haven't spoke to Aiden but he's been brilliant up there and probably the next step for him is the Premier League.

"Whether that's with us or not, I don't know."

Meanwhile, O'Neill has backed his former team Celtic to regain the Scottish Premier League title following back-to-back championship wins for Rangers.

Asked if he thought his former player Lennon could steer the club to success in his first season in charge, O'Neill answered: "I genuinely do.

"It seems to be auguring well, because Rangers are selling players and I saw Walter Smith saying he had a slight concern about letting players go and not getting anybody in.

"Celtic look pretty strong. They had a great back end to last season, in terms of league games. Neil has the backroom team he's asked for, so there's no reason he can't go on and take it ."

Always like wee McGeady.....that all changed with his antics after the semi final defeat in the Scottish cup...the bus arrived and most players kept there head down...but not that wee prima donna or his pal O'Dea....both were spoiling for a fight with the fans after we were rightly defeated.....they get good money every week and supported by the fans and didn't turn up for that match...the fans were shouting there displeasure at the players and rightly so after being humiliated.....they should have been man enough to take it...instead they acted like petulant wee dicks and were led away by stewards and a police officer for there own safety but they continued to shout the odds.O'Dea even said to one fan...whit did you expect me to do?Huh?(for the goals we lost)...a booming voice from one of the fans shouted Defend that's whit yer payed for. hysterical There is a vid of the bus arriving back at Celtic park but it does not show whit happened with those 2 roasters.
Be now quite happy to see the back of him...he can't shoot ..his crossing of a ball is terrible and has a habit of holding the ball to long...McCourt is far superior in all those departments and is more direct and a better eye for goal.
Take the money and run Celtic! praying

Spartak back for McGeady

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11781_6280739,00.html

Skysports.com understands that Aiden McGeady is set to decide whether to accept a move away from Celtic, with Spartak Moscow seemingly the only option available to him.

The Republic of Ireland player was holding out for a move to England with the likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham, Sunderland and Newcastle linked with moves.

His former boss Martin O'Neill was regarded as favourite to land his signature, but a deal has failed to materialise with Villa seemingly opting to look elsewhere.

Spartak first moved for McGeady earlier in the summer, but their bid of around £8million was rebuffed.

It is now believed they could be ready to do business at £10million, but McGeady has to make a decision and Celtic want a a quick answer.

The Bhoys have their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign on their minds and if McGeady is to leave, they want the deal doing this week.

Spartak, like Celtic, also want a decision to be made sooner rather than later, and they will hope McGeady opts for a move to the Russian capital.

BBC

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed there is "a big offer on the table" for winger Aiden McGeady.

McGeady, 24, has been linked with a move away from the Scottish club and last month was reportedly the subject of a £8.3m bid by Spartak Moscow.

Lennon said he was unsure whether the Republic of Ireland international would leave before the start of the season.

"There's strong interest, not just from Moscow. We believe there's interest from other clubs as well," he said.

McGeady, who signed a five-year deal in 2008, was absent from Celtic's Champions League qualifying defeat by Braga in midweek.

But he travelled with the rest of the squad to London for this weekend's Emirates Cup.

Celtic say McGeady has been recovering from thigh and back injuries but trained on Thursday ahead of the challenge games against Lyon on Saturday and Arsenal the following day.

Lennon said he had not asked McGeady a direct question about his intentions.

"I haven't really sat down and said: 'are you away?', or 'do you want to go?' or anything like that because I don't want to put unnecessary pressure on him," the Celtic boss added.

Lennon said McGeady had proved an important player for Celtic who would grace any league in the world.

"He's a big player for us and he has been for a number of seasons," he added.

"He was very important to me in the run-in to last season. He's a talented player, a very talented player. But every player has his price and sometimes we can't stand in the way of that.

"If the offer's right for the club and right for the player then it's hard to stop these things going through."

Celtic winger Aiden McGeady set for Spartak talks

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/8876282.stm

Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady will fly to Russia on Tuesday for signing talks with Spartak Moscow.

The 24-year-old has been the subject of a £9.5m bid by Spartak and Celtic boss Neil Lennon admits he may have played his last game for the club.

The Republic of Ireland winger will not feature in the midweek Champions League qualifier against Braga.

McGeady, who signed a five-year deal in 2008, is currently sidelined with a calf injury.

The winger has been struggling with injuries in pre-season but featured in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Lennon has praised McGeady for his displays for Celtic and said he would grace any league in the world.

"He's in a difficult situation at the minute and I've been there myself towards the end of my time at Leicester and the interest from Celtic," Lennon said.

"Your head's all over the place and I think he's in that place at the minute.

"As regards the injury, I do believe he's genuine. Aiden doesn't fake injuries; he wants to play football and has always wanted to play football.

"I have to take his word on this one."

By not playing him on Wednesday night, paves the way for Aiden to play in Europe for Spartak
