The Scottish Premier League has told BBC Scotland it will discuss a dossier on the poor state of Motherwell's pitch at the next board meeting.

The Fir Park pitch has been criticised in recent years, and, despite £350,000 of repairs it has deteriorated further.

"An independent expert has looked at the pitch and we'll get a full technical report from him," said Greig Mailer, SPL director of communications.

"Once we've got that we'll put it before the SPL board."

The Lanarkshire outfit spent £350,000 in the summer in a bid to rectify the playing surface problems that have dogged the club in recent seasons, including repairing and improving their undersoil heating system and replacing pipework.

However, the turf has come in for further criticism this term, although Motherwell claim sub-zero temperatures have hindered growth and the repeated use of the undersoil heating system has caused the pitch to soften.

The next meeting of the SPL takes place in over three weeks' time, and Mailer told BBC Scotland circumstances surrounding the weather conditions would be taken into account.

It looks pretty bad. What do you think, Brian?

Aye, it seems that it's bad enough as it was with just Motherwell playing there. I hope it gets sorted as us footy fans want games to go ahead - issues like dodgy pitches are right annoying and IMO it shouldn't happen these days. no  I accept though that the weather has been a bit crappy in recent times.

To be honest, there is little a groundsman can do in such conditions. The grass won't actively grow, so growing a new pitch can't happen, often with bad weather, means that machinery can't be used on the playing surface.

It has to be rolled to even out the bumps, which destroys soil structure, and makes drainage nigh on impossible, so then it has to be spiked and slitted, which relieves drainage, and gets air into the soil, but cuts the grass sward up, which when played on isn't a matt, so will cut up easier.

Short of spending major £££'s each season, any pitch will struggle

Would Fir Park's problems be the same as Derby County had with their old ground The Baseball Ground, I can remember that on MOTD back in the 70's and 80's looking like a quagmire  huh

Well it all depends on the budget, the actual construction of the pitch originally, the location of the pitch in relation to the sun.

I know that some football stadiums are built, and then the pitch thought about after - Man Utd being the highest profile, when they built Old Trafford, they forgot that the groundstaff would need machinery, tractors & mowers, that wouldnt go down a 3 foot staircase  ooops.

then other grounds, built with the stands right over the pitch, meaning the pitch only gets direct sunlight for a very short period each day. I know for a fact, that at Crewe Alex, that before their main stand was built, they had hardly any games called off, now they regularly do, since the sun only gets to the majority of the pitch in early afternoon.
