Port Vale defender Gareth Owen says that the versatility of the Valiants' squad will serve them well as they push for promotion from League Two.

Vale, who lie second in the Football League's bottom tier, have regularly alternated between employing a three-man and four-man defence this season.

"It comes from having players comfortable playing in a variety of positions," Owen told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We've gone from playing three centre halves to a back four faultlessly."

Owen, 28, singled out fellow defender Lee Collins and midfielder Doug Loft for specific praise.

"Lee Collins and Lofty have done well in any position they've played in," said the former Stoke City trainee.

"Lofty's one of the fittest at the club but he's got a lot of skill with it.

"I've been surprised by how strong he is. He's got a good footballing brain and I like having him outside me (at wing back) because he always wants the ball and I know he'll do his defensive duties as well.

"It's a squad game and we're going to need people to step up between now and the end of the season."

Well Dono mate, what do you think?.

It's true. I believe we have two of the best keepers in the league. 3 more than capable defenders in Sutton, McCombe and Owen, Lee Collins is excellent wherever he plays in the back four.

Midfield we have players who can play defensive cover, attacking cover, as well as people such as Doug Loft and Louis Dodds, who haven't really a proper position, but fit in well wherever they play.

"It's about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It's about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it's about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. About Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could phone home"
