Port Vale striker Marc Richards believes he and namesake Justin can still improve together beyond their fine start to the season.

The duo have notched five goals in the first four games of the League Two season to leave Vale unbeaten.

"The partnership's a work in progress," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"It's early days, we've only known each other for seven weeks. We're learning off each other and how each other plays and it can only get better."

Marc Richards's goal at Southend on Saturday, the third in a 3-1 win, was his second in successive league games.

It came after excellent link-up play between the two strikers on the edge of the box, culminating in a back heel from Justin Richards that opened up enough space for the 28-year-old to fire home.

His 29-year-old strike partner, who signed from Cheltenham in the summer, also found the net at Roots Hall.

The goal was Justin Richards's first in the league but comes shortly after his brace helped beat Queens Park Rangers in the first round of the Carling Cup.

In addition to his own performances, Marc Richards is also happy with the team's form with Vale taking seven points from their opening three league games.

"We're progressing well, we're a close squad and things are looking bright for us," he said.

Port Vale travel to Fulham for a second round Carling Cup tie on Wednesday.

They seem to have caught each others train of thought, and gelled together quickly. J Rico has taken a lot of the pressure off of M Rico, by doing a lot of the chasing around, but, for a big las, has got nice control

"It's about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It's about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it's about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. About Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could phone home"
