Port Vale defender Adam Yates wants to extend his stay at the club beyond his two-year contract.

The 27-year-old's current deal expires next summer but he would like to commit his long-term future to Micky Adams' promotion-chasing side.

Yates told BBC Radio Stoke: "Hopefully I can convince the manager I'm worth another contract. It's a fantastic club and I'm happy playing here."

Vale signed Yates on a free transfer from Morecambe in 2009.

The Valiants, currently second in League Two, set a new club record in September by recording four consecutive away wins at the start of a season.

Yates added: "I think we are a strong and solid unit, when we are playing away from home other teams have a go at us and that gives us space to counter-attack. We're playing with freedom and confidence."

Accrington Stanley are the visitors to Vale Park on Saturday.

A victory for Vale could see them top the league.

"We need to start the game quickly and set the tempo, we want to make sure they know they are in a game," added Yates.

"Points are vital for us at home because that is what will dictate our season."

What do you reckon Tom, is he worth another contract?.

Most improved player over the course of the end of last season and this season so far. Started a bit dodgy, and aint the fastest right back in the world, but he always seems to be in the right place, and his positional sense is great.

Really worked on the attacking side of his game also.

I'd give him another year contract

"It's about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It's about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it's about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. About Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could phone home"
