Defender Chris Barker is keen to extend his loan deal at Southend United from Plymouth Argyle.

The 30-year-old has started every Shrimpers game this season after being told his future lies away from Argyle.

He told BBC Essex: "I'm very happy. I've probably got no future at Plymouth Argyle at the moment but I'll probably speak to the gaffer this week.

"I'm enjoying it, I've been here three or four weeks now. I finish next Friday, but we'll see what happens."

Paul Sturrock's side have picked up just one point in three League Two games this campaign and Barker is up for the challenge of turning their fortunes around.

"The club have been fantastic. They're a great set of lads but we've got to improve on the pitch very quickly," he said.

"Hopefully this season will turn around and we will get back up the league."

The left-back is familiar with Sturrock, after the Scot took him to Home Park from QPR in 2008.

"He bought me at Plymouth Argyle two or three years ago, so when I spoke to him about coming here I had no problem," he added.

"He said come and play six or seven games, like I'm doing. There's no point playing reserve football and we'll see what the situation is next week."
