bbc technology news

Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google.

Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.

Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.

Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.

"Surprisingly, many users fall victim to these attacks and pay to register the fake [anti-virus software]," the study said.

"To add insult to injury, fake anti-viruses often are bundled with other malware, which remains on a victim's computer regardless of whether a payment is made."

'Be suspicious'

The study, which was presented at the Usenix Workshop on Large-Scale Exploits and Emergent Threats in California, analysed websites between January 2009 and February 2010.

It discovered more than 11,000 web domains involved in its distribution of fake anti-virus.

More than half of the fake software - which predomianntly targets Windows machines - was delivered via adverts, Google said.

Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos, who was not involved in the study, said that one of the key ways that hackers spread fake anti-virus was so-called black hat search engine optimisation techniques.

"The hackers track trending news stories - such as the death of Michael Jackson," he said.

"They then create websites stuffed with content, which in many cases can appear on the first page of search results."

Anyone clicking on the link, he said, would be confronted with a pop-up with a link to fake anti-virus software.

Google uses tools to filter out booby-trapped websites, but the firm said that hackers were managing to avoid detection by moving between domains quickly.

Mr Cluley said that people should be familiar with their own anti-virus software and should "always be suspicious" if they were confronted with a pop-up telling them you need to download something extra or spend money to clean up a computer.

"If you already have anti-virus installed you shouldn't need to do that," he said.

If you want free anti malaware software, I personally use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It is a cracking programme and don't have problems.

You can get a free version which is good as well by going to http://malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Just choose the free download rather than the full version.

That is ok for the tech savvy amongst us. Unfortunately not everyone is like you or I.
the Jimmie's of this world need that assistance as their speciality lies elsewhere, so for those a free programme to do the job can be of great assistance.

ok step by step tutorial on how to romove rogue anti-virus software

note intalling another antivirus will not work, the rogue software will just make it a virus itself

                                method 1:
step 1: format your Hard drive you will lose all you data stored, so you have to reinstall everything including operating system and drivers

or if you wanna keep your stuff and data

                                  meathod 2:

step one: restart in safemode, to do this restart your computer and keep pressing f6 or f8 i cant remember which one just keep pressing them both. then click "safe mode" NOT "safe mode with networking"

step two: press ctrl + alt + delete then click "task manager"

step 3: click the "processes" tab

step 4: click the little box that says "show processes from all users"

step 5: find the rouge antivirus process e.g. if the name was "xp anti virus, i'd fine a process in the lis with that name.

step 6: after you ended the process click off task manager

step 7: click the start button and then click run if your running windows xp if below if vista or windows 7 click search

step 8: then if your using windows xp type "sysconfig" or if vista or 7 type system config and click the top link NOTE: if you're not experianced with computers then DONT FUCK WITH ANYTHING APART FROM WHAT THIS TUORIAL SAYS. seriously it'll fuck your computer if you make the wrong change. oh yer did i mention? DONT FUCK AROUND WITH ANYTHING

step 9: click the "services" tab"

step 10: find the name of your rogue anti virus. in my example i'd look for xp anti virus

step 11:  then uncheck the box.

step 12: the click the "boot" tab

step 13: find the name of the rogue antivirus

step 14: uncheck that box also the chances are the rouge antivirus turned off your legit antivirus if this is the case, find it and check it NOTE: YOU HAVE NOT GOT RID OF IT YET.

step 15: restart your computer back into safemode

step 16: run your antivirus to completely rid your computer of it.

step 17: restart and run normally

the 17 easy steps to getting rid of rogue antivirus. enjoy!  thumbs up Good Job
