Andre Johnson has signed a new contract extension with the Houston Texans, and it is believed to be one that makes him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.

The four-time Pro Bowler still had five years left on his current deal, but felt his efforts over the last couple of season warranted a pay rise, and the Texans have duly responded with the new extension.

Although neither party have officially revealed the numbers, various media reports state that his new two-year deal is worth $38 million, meaning his seven-year contract in full is now worth around $73 million.

29-year-old Johnson missed three voluntary training camps in May to shed light on his contract situation, but he showed up on time for training camp so as not to draw any bad press upon the team's preparations for the season.

His actions made the deal more amicable on both sides, and now Johnson is happy to stay in Houston for the rest of his NFL career.

First class
"There's nothing I can complain about," Johnson said. "For me to be in the situation I was in, for this to happen, it just speaks a lot to the people we have in the organisation and the owner we have. It's a first-class organisation. I'm very happy right now.

"I'm very happy that we were able to get everything settled, and I can move forward with football.

"I can't say that the offseason wasn't a little bit frustrating, just sitting at home and thinking about contract things. Once I came in, I put it behind me and I let my agent handle it. As you can see, it worked out, so I'm very excited about it.

"I always said I wanted to play for one team. And to be able to play for the Houston Texans for the rest of my career, it's a tremendous honour."

Johnson has been the standout receiver of the last two years as he became just the second man to lead the league in receiving yards in consecutive seasons and also the second to record back-to-back years of over 1,500 yards.

Records
After grabbing 1,575 yards in 2008, Johnson bagged 1,569 yards last season as the Texans went 9-7 to record a first winning season in their short history, and now Johnson is targeting the post-season.

"I always said I wanted to be a part of something special," he said. "I know coming to a new organisation, things were going to be a little rough in the beginning. Now, I feel like things have taken that turn for us. I'm very excited for this upcoming season."

Texans owner Bob McNair was delighted with the deal, and sees star man Johnson, who leads the league in average receiving yards per game since 2006, as a future Hall of Fame candidate.

"Andre is in a special class, and I think the action we've taken is a reflection of how we view Andre," McNair said. "It's important to us that Andre have one home, and that's with the Texans."

Westbrook joins 49ers
Former Pro Bowl running back to continue career in San Francisco

Veteran running back Brian Westbrook has signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the NFL Network reported it was worth up to $2.5 million, with $1.2m guaranteed.

Westbrook, 30, spent his first eight seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he holds the franchise record for yards from scrimmage (9,785).

He was released by the Eagles in March after starting just seven games last season due to a succession of concussion-related problems.

His decision to continue his career in San Francisco will see him paired with fellow Pro Bowl rusher Frank Gore.

The 49ers had a vacancy in their backfield after second-year pro Glen Coffee's abrupt retirement

The National Football League has announced that 2014's Super Bowl will be played in New York/New Jersey.

The 82,566-capacity New Meadowlands Stadium, which will be home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, opened in April at a cost of $1.6bn (£1.1bn).

However, it will be the first time the NFL showpiece event, set to take place in early February, will be held outdoors in a cold climate.

Florida rivals Miami and Tampa were the two unsuccessful bidding cities.

The record for the coldest Super Bowl was set at Tulane Stadium, New Orleans in 1972, when the game kicked off in the temperature of 39 degrees Farenheit - but this may be broken in 2014.

The New Meadowlands Stadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just across the state line from New York - and its bid's organisers say February temperatures in the area are usually 24 to 40 degrees.

In the past, the NFL has traditionally insisted that the Super Bowl must be held in areas where the external temperature exceeds 50 degrees Farenheit (10 degrees Celsius) - or in a stadium with a dome or closed roof.

But the Super Bowl Advisory Committee agreed to waive that rule to allow the New York/New Jersey bid for Super Bowl XLVIII.

The voting required four ballots to separate the candidate stadiums, as no bid received backing from the required 24 of the 32 NFL team owners in the first ballot.

Miami, a 10-time Super Bowl host, was eliminated on the second ballot, with New York/New Jersey winning via a simple majority on the fourth ballot.

The next three Super Bowls will be held in Dallas (2011), Indianapolis (2012) and New Orleans (2013).

Avery to miss entire season

sky sports

Avery: carted off with torn ACL

St Louis Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery will play no part in the 2010 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.

Avery suffered the injury late in the second quarter of the Rams' 36-35 pre-season victory over the New England Patriots on August 26.

"They'll let it calm down, and then at some point he will have surgery," said St Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

"He was having a terrific game. Donnie's a quality guy and a character guy, and we'll miss him."

Avery, a second-round pick in the 2008 draft, was the Rams' leading receiver last season with 47 catches.

QB worry for Steelers
Steelers have worries at quarterback after Leftwich injury

Pittsburgh's quarterback troubles worsened on Thursday as Byron Leftwich, the expected stand-in for suspended Ben Roethlisberger, went down with what seems to be a serious knee injury.

Leftwich left Pittsburgh's final pre-season game against Carolina with what reportedly is a problem with his medial knee ligament, and an MRI on Friday will discover the full extent of the problem.

It seems likely that he will miss the Steelers' regular season opener against Atlanta on September 12, meaning Dennis Dixon will now be taking the snaps coming the opening weekend.

"It's an opportunity, I guess, but it's unfortunate for Byron for what he went through," said Dixon, who has started only one NFL game. "But this team has to continue to go forward. I know once he's going to come back, he's going to give us nothing but tremendous support."

Roethlisberger is suspended for the first six weeks of the season, but will meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday hoping to have that reduced to four.

Meeting
The extent of Leftwich's injury will determine just how urgent that meeting is, but in any case coach Mike Tomlin will hope to have the two-time Super Bowl winner back in the fold as early as possible.

Roethlisberger spoke with Letfwich as he left the Steelers locker room for the last time in at least month - as he is unable to practice or be with the team during his suspension.

"It's very tough, kind of emotional," said Roethlisberger. "I've just got to go do what I've got to do."

Dixon went on to replace Leftwich against Carolina and threw a touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders in a 19-3 win for the Steelers to round of their pre-season campaign.

With Dixon due to now start the season, Charlie Batch will be the back-up, which will be something of a reprieve for the serial back-up who was in danger of losing his spot on the roster.

It is here at last the 2010 season kicks off tonight.

The storyline

Brett Favre and his ankle try to withstand another Gregg Williams' blitz onslaught, while a Super Bowl banner is raised in the Superdome. Other than that, nothing to see here.

Why to watch

This NFC title game rematch is filled with subplots, even with the Vikings sans Sidney Rice and the Saints without Darren Sharper. These teams provided a game for the ages last time. Can they duplicate?

Did you know?

This is the Vikings' 50th season. ... Adrian Peterson set a Minnesota franchise record with 18 rushing touchdowns last season. ... The Saints led the NFL with 510 points in 2009. ... New Orleans QB Drew Brees established a new league mark last year by completing 70.6 percent of his passes.

Offensive Comparison
Total Yards Per Game  MV 379.6 NO 403.8
Passing Yards Per Game MV 259.8 NO 272.2

Points Per Game MV 29.4 NO 31.9

nfl uk

The New Orleans Saints made a successful start to the defense of their Super Bowl title with a 14-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night in the first game of the 2010 NFL season.

Drew Brees and the Saints extended New Orleans' post-Super Bowl euphoria for at least another week and denied Brett Favre a victory in the Louisiana Superdome one more time.

Brees completed 27 of 36 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown, while it wasn't the most spectacular way to open a title defense, considering it was a rematch of last January's riveting NFC title game, it set the home team onto a winning start in their Super Bowl sequel.

"We're not used to 14-9 victories, but we're used to winning," said Brees, the reigning Super Bowl MVP. "So we like the W."

It was the lowest-scoring victory of the Sean Payton era, which began in 2006, but the Saints will take it, especially after their defense limited Favre to 171 yards passing and one touchdown.

"I know people are going to say it wasn't the fireworks they expected it to be," Favre said.

Although his offense was far less potent than usual, Payton said he "was proud of the way we came through and made enough plays to start the season 1-0."

Unlike the NFC Championship game, the Vikings didn't lose a fumble and turned the ball over only once, on Jonathan Vilma's interception of Favre, who made an ill-advised throw as Roman Harper hit him on a safety blitz.

Also unlike their previous meeting, the Saints had most of the statistical advantages, outgaining Minnesota, 308 yards to 253, and controlling the ball for 33 minutes, 43 seconds, compared to 26:17 for Minnesota.

"We knew we would have to play better in a lot of areas than we did last year (against the Vikings), and I felt like we did," Brees said. "We just showed that we can win in a lot of different ways."

New Orleans might have won the game more easily if not for two missed field goals by Garrett Hartley, who kicked the dramatic winning field goal last year.

New Orleans was nonetheless able to kneel on the ball to run out most of the last two minutes after Pierre Thomas capped a 71-yard, one-touchdown performance with 10-yard, first-down run right after the two-minute warning.

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 122 yards and three TDs in the last meeting, ran for 87 yards on 19 carries against New Orleans' stingy defense.

"We did a very good job of holding against the run and still taking some of the downfield throws away," Payton said.

Although the game was competitive, it hardly lived up to its hype.

Favre's comeback from ankle surgery, marking the start of his 20th season, was largely unspectacular. Despite being sacked only once and hit not nearly as often, nor as hard, as in the NFC title game, he looked out of sync or inaccurate at times. That Minnesota was without star receiver Sidney Rice might have had something to do with that.

"There's three or four throws that I just missed," Favre said. "I have no excuse. I just missed."

Favre's best sequence came on Minnesota's only touchdown drive, late in the first half, when he found Vinsanthe Shiancoe on precision down-the-middle completions of 33 and 20 yards, the second for the touchdown.

That gave Minnesota a 9-7 halftime lead, which the Saints erased on their first drive of the second half.

"We were right where we wanted to be at halftime, then it was three-and-out, three-and-out," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "There were not a lot of throws to be made downfield. They were going to hold us down and make us bleed slowly."

The Saints' triumph ended a long day of festivities that for some might have been more exciting than the game itself.

Tailgaters were setting up around the Superdome at dawn, and one pregame cookout even doubled as a wedding. Some government offices, business and schools shut down.

NFL-sponsored pregame festivities included a concert in the French Quarter featuring Dave Matthews and Taylor Swift, along with a Mardi Gras-style parade, for which police estimated the crowd at about 200,000.

Shortly before kickoff, singer and New Orleans native Harry Connick Jr. entered the Superdome on a parade float with a giant replica of the silver Vince Lombardi Trophy. Also on the float was Saints owner Tom Benson, holding the real trophy.

Shortly before kickoff, Brees stood on the 30-yard line, holding a fist up high before pumping his arm down in an orchestrated move to send the sellout crowd of 70,051 into a chants of "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints!"

Soon after, the Saints received the opening kickoff and scored after only five plays, with Brees hitting three of his first four passes for 69 yards, including a 29-yard scoring strike to Devery Henderson on a rollout.

Grant out for Green Bay
Packers lose star running back for rest of the season

sky sports

Green Bay running back Ryan Grant's season lasted just one game as a torn ankle ligament will see him miss the remainder of the campaign.

Grant was forced out of Green Bay's 27-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday with an injury that is reported to be a torn ankle ligament.

The 27-year-old, who has rushed for 1,200 yards in two straight seasons, is expected to require surgery followed by a lengthy period of rehab.

The Packers are expected to launch a strong Super Bowl challenge this season behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers' ever-improving form, but running back Grant was also seen as a vital part of their offensive attack.

Brandon Jackson will not be charged with carrying the Packers' rushing attack for the rest of the season, although the team admitted losing Grant was a huge blow.

"When you lose a running back of Ryan's calibre, it's a big loss," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "But this is something we have to deal with and move forward from as a team."

Green Bay also lost defensive end Justin Harrell during the Philadelphia game, and he also will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

"We have confidence that our other players will step up and meet the challenge of these losses," added Thompson. "Our medical people will do a great job with Justin and Ryan, and we expect each to make a full recovery from their injuries."

Green Bay made immediate moves to cover for the losses by signing running back Dimitri Nance and defensive end Jarius Wynn to replace Grant and Harrell.
