sky sports

The New Orleans Saints were crowned Super Bowl champions for the first time in their history after a shock 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns to be crowned MVP as the underdogs pulled off a stunning upset in Miami.

For New Orleans the win brings a long awaited first championship, a special moment not just for a success-starved franchise but also for a city that was left devastated by Hurricane Katrina less than five years ago.

To end their long wait to receive the Lombardi Trophy they had to rally from an early 10-0 deficit, while they also trailed 17-16 heading into the final quarter of a game that was billed as a battle of two offensive juggernauts.

Defensive play
In the end, though, it was a defensive play that sealed the outcome, Tracy Porter's 74-yard interception return putting the Saints 14 points clear.

Not even four-time MVP Peyton Manning could engineer a comeback in the dying minutes, meaning the Indianapolis quarterback - who threw for 333 yards and a score in defeat - lost out on a second Super Bowl ring to a team for whom his father, Archie, spent the majority of his playing career.

Such an outcome had seemed unlikely at the end of a first quarter that saw the red-hot favourites dominate on both sides of the ball.

Twice the Colts produced 11-play drives of ruthless efficiency, the first ending in a 38-yard field goal from Matt Stover that broke the deadlock.

When Manning found Pierre Garcon in the end zone with a perfectly-timed 19-yard pass to make it 10-0, the writing looked on the wall for the Saints.

Yet from a position of such strength the Colts failed to kick on. They managed to run just six plays in a second quarter that saw the Saints come to life.

However New Orleans still trailed at the break, Indy's bend-but-don't-break defence, which emphatically stopped tail-back Pierre Thomas on a fourth-and-goal run, restricting them to two field goals from Garrett Hartley.

Sensing his side needed a spark on offence, Saints head coach Sean Payton played his joker at the start of the second half by going for an onside kick.

The gamble paid off handsomely when Brees teamed up with Thomas on a 16-yard screen pass that resulted in New Orleans' first touchdown.

The Colts' response to falling behind for the first time was emphatic. Manning looked back to his best to set up a four-yard TD run for Joseph Addai.

A third successful field goal from Hartley - making him the first kicker ever to land three efforts from 40 yards or more in the Super Bowl - set up a dramatic final 15 minutes with the Saints trailing by a single point.

Crucial miss
That gap would have been at four had veteran Stover not pushed a 51-yard field goal attempt wide to the left on the Colts' next drive.

Gifted the ball back with excellent field position, the Saints made their rivals pay to push themselves into a lead they would not surrender again.

Brees completed pass-after-pass, the last of which was a two-yarder to tight end Jeremy Shockey that made it 22-17. A two-point conversion attempt to Lance Moore was just successful on review, making it a seven-point game.

Manning had time on his side to engineer a game-tying drive and few would have bet against one of the modern-day greats forcing overtime.

That possibility disappeared, though, when Porter stepped in front of a pass meant for Reggie Wayne before galloping away from the Colts and allowing those back on Bourbon Street to get Mardi Gras underway ahead of schedule.

The Philadelphia Eagles have insisted that they will not be cutting Michael Vick after he hit the headlines following a shooting at a Virginia nightclub.

Vick has been caught up in a shooting that occurred outside a restaurant and nightclub where he was celebrating his 30th birthday on June 24.

Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant in the dogfighting case that landed the quarterback in federal prison, was allegedly hit by gunshots fired outside the venue, but Vick has insisted he had nothing to do with the event.

Vick is not allowed to associate himself with Phillips as part of his probation, a fact which has further muddied the waters of the situation.

The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback says he had nothing to do with the incident, and insists he notified his team and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell immediately after the shooting.

Incident
"I want to assure everyone that I had nothing to do with that incident," Vick said. "I left the restaurant prior to it occurring and did not witness what happened."

Goodell has previously said that Vick has no leeway in his future conduct, and it had been reported that the Eagles were looking to now trade him away, but they insist that that is not the case.

"Any report or speculation that suggests the Eagles are considering releasing Vick are not true," read a team statement. "We will continue to gather information and monitor the situation and we will not have any further comment until that process is complete.

"Under normal circumstances, we would not issue a public statement regarding a matter still under investigation. However, due to the intense speculation that exists, we believe it is important to make a statement this afternoon regarding Michael Vick.

"Following the incident that occurred in Virginia on the morning of June 25, Michael and his representatives promptly contacted law enforcement agencies, the Philadelphia Eagles and the National Football League.

"The Eagles were provided with very detailed information during that discussion as to what took place at the event. Those details have not changed in any way over the course of the last week. Our investigation to this point has confirmed and has been consistent with the information that was originally communicated to us."

Vick will earn $5.2 million this season if he remains with Philadelphia as back-up to new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, and the team believe he was not involved in the shooting with only bad judgement his failing this time around.

Jackson hit with suspension
Wide receiver still allowed to participate in pre-season games

sky sports

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson has been hit with a three-game ban for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Jackson will now be suspended for the regular season contests against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Seattle Seahawks.

However the five-year veteran will be allowed to participate in the Chargers' pre-season practices and games.

"Obviously we're disappointed," Chargers general manager AJ Smith said in a statement. "Vincent made a mistake and now must deal with the consequences."

Jackson's ban comes after he threatened to sit out the first 10 games of the new campaign due to a dispute with San Diego over a contract extension.

The Pro Bowler, who had 68 receptions for 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns last year, has refused to sign his tender as a restricted free agent.

Seahawk suspended
Linebacker handed one-match suspension by league

The NFL has suspended Seattle Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill for one game for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Hill has also lost two week's wages as part of his sanctions, after he was arrest in January last year in Georgia for marijuana possession, for which he has been handed 12 months' probation.

The game on September 12 against NFC West rivals San Francisco is the one Hill must now sit out, while he can still take part in team practice sessions.

The 2005 draft pick has started 61 of his 67 games but only played in 11 games last season because of a torn groin muscle.

Hill is also being investigated for an alleged domestic violence charge after being arrested in Seattle in April, and he is likely to be handed a trial date later in July.

NFL commissioner has held talks with Hill after his off-field problems, but the player says these have been promising meetings.

"It was informative, it was a good meeting. Everything went well," Hill said. "It was just a Q-and-A, basically. It was informative. I listened a lot, learned a lot."

Hill bagged a sex-year deal worth $36 million last year, but his possible upcoming trial could put that in jeopardy.

Bengals take a chance on T.O

After a constant questioning about his where he'd play football in 2010, Terrell Owens finally had an answer: he'll play in Cincinnati.

In March the Buffalo Bills said that they were not going to offer 'T.O.' a contract after he had only 859 yard receiving and five touchdowns, setting off an unlikely chain of events.

The Bengals may have taken a big risk by adding another flamboyant wide receiver to play alongside Chad Ochocinco, but head coach Marvin Lewis is confident Owens will prove an astute new signing.

"I think really we're adding a player who has been extremely productive throughout his career and really compliments the guys that we have offensively already," Lewis told the NFL Network on Tuesday.

"But really, when Terrell didn't sign, obviously they still had the interest and the attraction. I'm glad it was able to work out. It makes for the greater good of the football team."

Twitter
Owens said on his Twitter account on Monday that he was hoping to be a Bengal "in the next 24 hours", and told verbose friend and future team-mate Ochocinco: "Ocho Uno is coming 2 town!! Hey Robin, Batman will b there soon!"

Ochocinco was equally confident, saying that the prospects were also good for the running backs corps: "I bet I won't see all them damn double teams now! Cedric Benson could have a 2,000 yard season with the attention we gonna command!"

Owens' agent Drew Rosenhaus told the US media: "The Bengals have always been the front-runner.

"Even though I talked to some other teams during this process, the Bengals have always been the team that showed the most interest. Terrell has always been excited about them."

However, it's going to take quite a feat for Owens, who has also played for the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers to remove Ochocinco- who was the Bengals' prime threat last year - from the top of the receivers' chart.

The major question will be whether he can be the club's second-best receiver - especially as the Bengals doled out $28m for a four-year contract for Tampa Bay's Antonio Bryant.

Jets bag back-up Brunell
Veteran quarterback moving to the Big Apple as Sanchez's back up

sky sports

After providing back-up to Super Bowl winner Drew Brees in New Orleans last year, veteran quarterback Mark Brunell has signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets.

The 39-year-old has spent 18 seasons in the NFL and has amassed nearly 32,000 yards passing and 182 touchdown passes during his lengthy career.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan wanted an experienced campaigner to back-up second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez and also act as a mentor for his future development.

The move had been expected for weeks but the Jets could not make any moves in the market until free agency restrictions over last season's play-off teams were lifted last week.

Back-up
Brunell started just once in the last three seasons as back-up to Brees in New Orleans, but was always seen as a key figure in the locker room as the Saints won their first Super Bowl last season.

One of Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge and Kevin O'Connell will now be cut by the Jets, with all three of them together not having as many starts as Sanchez now has after his 15 regular game starts in his rookie season.

The USC product led the Jets to within a game of the Super Bowl last season, and Ryan is keen to see him continue his development and feels having Brunell with him can only help this coming campaign.

Brunell has reportedly penned a two-year deal in New York, to join his fifth NFL team after playing for Green Bay, Jacksonville and Washington before joining the Saints.

No one is forcing you to like or dislike American Football. If you don't that's fine but there are a lot of us that do and it is one small thread in the forum for those that do. And before you argue the case don't I had that with others. I would point you towards the number of times this thread is read and with numbers that high it is a popular thread whether you like the sport or not.
I respect your opinion to not like it all I ask is respect those who do rather than point out a description of football, which by the way was first called soccer not football.
