The St Louis Rams traded their linebacker Will Witherspoon to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and rookie wide receiver Brandon Gibson.

The Eagles are light at linebacker with scheduled starter Stewart Bradley out with a torn knee ligament, and his replacements have so far failed to sparkle.

Eight-year NFL veteran Witherspoon is the man head coach Andy Reid has brought in to shore-up his defence, and he will play in the middle for the Eagles.

"He's a three-down linebacker, and he can play both the mike position and the will linebacker position," Reid said of Witherspoon.

"He's very good at both of them. He's a good cover linebacker. He has the flexibility to cover tight ends and running backs and that type of thing, which is a plus."

Big move
Witherspoon, who has 33 tackles this season, now moves up a notch in the NFL - going from the 0-6 Rams to an Eagles team being touted as possible Super Bowl contenders despite their surprise loss in Oakland on Sunday.

"It means a lot to go to a team that has the opportunity to be a contender," he said. "That's what you have to look at. You have to sit there and say, 'OK, take the positives out of everything.'

"I know I'm leaving kind of a comfort zone here, being that I've been here for almost the last four years, but I'm moving into another situation."

Along with the draft pick, the Rams acquired rookie wideout Gibson, who the Eagles took out of the sixth round of the draft, in the deal.

Gibson had impressed the Eagles but with a wealth of talent on their roster he has not seen any action this season - but that should change in St Louis.

The Rams have been hurting at receiver all season and arguably their first choice Donny Avery picked up a hip injury during Sunday's overtime defeat against Jacksonville.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have returned from London with change in mind, anointing rookie Josh Freeman as their new starting quarterback ahead of Byron Leftwich and Josh Johnson.

Freeman was the 17th overall pick in the first round of this year's draft. He made his NFL debut last Sunday, playing two series during the fourth quarter of a 35-7 loss to the New England Patriots in London.

"It's definitely something I've been working toward," Freeman said Wednesday. "It's finally going to be great to get an opportunity to step out there and do something.

"My mind-set right now is to prepare the best I can and then go out and do what I do, which is play football and try to find a way to get a win."

Bucs coach Raheem Morris was noncommittal about his quarterback plans after Freeman completed 2 of 4 passes for 16 yards and was sacked twice for 16 yards in losses during his brief stint against New England. But Morris officially made the change when the Bucs practiced for the first time since returning from London.

He's been waiting for his time patiently, but he's used his time wisely," said Morris, who has maintained from the day Freeman was drafted that he will not rush the 21-year-old's development. "The plan bringing him in here was let him sit behind a vet. Hopefully, the vet will get you a bunch of wins, but that didn't happen. ...

"He's earned the right. He's went into the lab, he's done the extra studying, he's done the extra preparation."

The Bucs (0-7) have a bye this week, meaning Freeman will have extra time to prepare for his first start November 8th at home against the Green Bay Packers.

Freeman replaces second-year pro Josh Johnson as the starter. Johnson, a fifth-round pick in 2008, made four starts after veteran Byron Leftwich led the Bucs for the first three weeks of the season.

"No discredit to what Josh Johnson has done for this football team," Morris said. "He went out there and gave his best efforts. But due to the preparation, the timing, how we want to implement (Freeman) to our system, to our organization, to our town ... it's time for a little Josh Freeman."

Morris has known Freeman since the quarterback was a freshman at Kansas State and the coach was the defensive coordinator there.

Freeman was the third quarterback selected in this year's draft, behind Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez. The 6-foot-6, 248-pounder said it was difficult riding the bench the past seven weeks, but he believes it will prove beneficial.

"I've learned a lot," Freeman said. "I've had the opportunity to watch it from a different point of view and see things unfold. I feel like I've really grown as a passer and also as a leader on this team."

No nerves for Favre

Brett Favre does not think he will be struck down by nerves as he makes his first appearance in Green Bay as a visiting quarterback, when the Minnesota Vikings face the Packers on Sunday.

The huge divisional battle between the Vikings and Packers always has plenty of feeling, but this week will be an extra special event, which is live on Sky Sports 2.

After 16 seasons and a Super Bowl win, future Hall of Famer Favre is a legend around Green Bay, but he will enter historic Lambeau Field as a visiting player for the first time on Sunday.

Although he left two seasons ago, the New York Jets did not visit Lambeau last year and he will ironically make his first guest appearance at the stadium playing for Green bay's fierce rivals Minnesota.

The 40-year-old has already come through his first game against his old team with flying colours, as he threw three touchdowns during the Vikings' 30-23 win on October 5.

But running out on his old turf in front of the fans that adored him for so long will be a different story, although Favre does not think he will be as nervous as in his first game for Minnesota.

Nerves
"I don't think it'll be as bad," Favre said. "But I don't know that. I think that's probably more intriguing to everyone else."

Brushing aside all the emotion that will come up on Sunday, Favre is focusing on the game itself, as the Vikings look to bounce back from their first loss of the season last week with a win against their NFC North rivals.

"To me, being able to focus, being relaxed, kind of seeing things clearly as they're happening is a much better and more productive way to play," Favre added.

"Being nervous and having anxiety and things like that, I don't think can be a plus when you're in a decision-making role."

As for what kind of reception Favre will receive from his former followers, Packers coach Mike McCarthy could not guarantee a warm welcome.

"I think our fans here in Green Bay are first class, and I think they'll do what they feel is appropriate," McCarthy said.

Favre has insisted his Green Bay legacy should not be erased by him playing for Minnesota, but either way he would not be losing sleep about those Packer fans who will now turn on him.

"If you're a true fan, you're a true fan," he said. "The people that have jumped ship or whatever completely, what can I do? There was always Brett Favre haters out there, and that will never change."

Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Daniels, 26, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the first quarter of the Texans' 31-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills on November 1.

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak has confirmed Daniels requires an operation and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

"It's a big blow to our football team," Kubiak said.

"I just feel bad for him. He was having a tremendous season, a special football season, and we're going to miss him big-time."

Daniels had 40 receptions for 519 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns before being injured.

Bloody fantastic game the Giants v Chargers.
Giants in first half and Chargers back at em in the second.
Chargers have just gone in for a touchdown with 21secs left to take the lead by 1 point.

Tense can the Giants win it or will there not be enough time, even with their two time outs.
