Kevin 'The Hammer' Mitchell and Michael 'The Gladiator' Katsidis have gone head-to-head for the final time before their Interim WBO world lightweight title clash at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday night.

Mitchell was cheered on by around 150 supporters as he weighed-in 1lb below the 9st 9lbs limit in the stadium's Legends Lounge - adorned with lifesize images of heroes such as Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking and Billy Bonds.

Australian Katsidis, meanwhile, received some good-natured heckling as he tipped the scales at 9st 8lbs 6oz.

The two combatants then went nose-to-nose, with the unbeaten Mitchell (31-0) fixing champion Katsidis (26-2-1) with a steely stare as the pair stood just inches apart.

Fittingly for an event being held in a football ground, the crowd erupted into a chorus of 'One Kevin Mitchell' in support of the West Ham United-supporting, Dagenham-based  BOX

Promoter Frank Warren said the 'Hammer Time' show, which will also feature the British heavyweight title showdown between Danny Williams and Derek Chisora and Olympic gold medallist James DeGale, had caught the imagination of the east London public.

"All the fighters and fight fans are really up for it. This is history. There's never been a live fight at Upton Park. It's something all East End fighters dream about and, when you think about all the history of boxing in east London, it's one of the hotbeds of boxing in the UK and Kevin Mitchell is doing something none of them have ever done before.

"We're at the Mecca of sport in east London. I'm delighted to be part of it and I'm really pleased for Kevin. I think we might have a bit of a classic here.

"I think it's going to be a tough night. Katsidis is someone who comes to the ring dressed up as gladiator and that's how he fights. He doesn't give an inch and won't give up at all.

"Kevin has got a fighter's heart, that's how he is. He's matured a lot over the last year or so, as far as his boxing is concerned, and if he can keep all that together then he can win this fight. It's going to be a war, though, there's no doubt about it.

"We've got a good crowd coming. There will be a tremendous atmosphere. West Ham thankfully got themselves safe from relegation and hopefully Kevin can add to that.

"This is the start of something big. If Kevin comes through this, we can be doing this here on a regular basis. He's a likeable kid, he's a great fighter and people get behind him."

Come on the Dagenham Hammer thumbs up

Katsidis shatters Mitchell dream

http://www.whufc.com/articles/20100515/katsidis-shatters-mitchell-dream_2236884_2053206

Kevin 'The Hammer' Mitchell's dream of becoming a world champion at the home of his beloved West Ham United was shattered by Michael 'The Gladiator' Katsidis on Saturday night.

Mitchell was stopped by the powerful Australian one minute and 57 seconds into the third round of their Interim WBO world lightweight title bout at the Boleyn Ground.

Despite the support of nearly everyone in the 14,000-strong crowd, the Dagenham-based boxer was unable to contend with his powerfully-built opponent, and once the fight descended into a brutal, toe-to-toe battle, he always looked in trouble.

Mitchell's entrance was as spectacular as anything the Boleyn Ground has ever seen, with the fighter being accompanied to the ring by a special version of 'Bubbles' performed by The Cockney Rejects.

Even Katsidis, dressed as always as an ancient Greek gladiator, could not outshine the home hero, nor his vociferous supporters. Unfortunately, it was a different story once the opening bell was rung.

Following a stirring rendition of the national anthem from X Factor star Stacey Solomon, the Australian started the better of the two, unleashing a flurry of blows to slow Mitchell's early charge.

Into the second round and 'The Hammer' regained this poise with his superior boxing skills, eluding Katsidis's powerful blows with intelligent movement and landing some telling shots of his own.

The third was non-stop action from the opening bell, with the champion striking first to send Mitchell stumbling backwards to the ropes.

Although the unbeaten Londoner appeared to rediscover his composure, 'The Gladiator' went on the offensive again, pinning the 25-year-old to the ropes before forcing a stoppage with a relentless barrage after one minute and 57 seconds of the third round.

Earlier, Olympic middleweight champion James DeGale, who won gold in Beijing in 2008, produced a powerful display in knocking out Sam Horton in the fifth round.

DeGale sent Horton to the canvas with a left hook in the second round, but the Midlands-based fighter recovered to continue after a count of eight.

It was only delaying the inevitable, however, as 'Chunky' produced a convincing performance in front of a passionate London crowd.

Dressed in fetching pink shorts, DeGale enjoyed the moment, posing with his WBA international super-middleweight title belt after extending his unbeaten record to 7-0.

It was Mitchell who the vast majority of the crowd had come to see however, and there was a stunned silence when referee Dave Parris stepped in front of their hero to stop the fight.

While the outcome of the main event was not what the locals would have wanted, the success of 'Hammer Time' will ensure that the first night of world championship boxing held at the home of the Hammers is certainly not the last.

Katsidis done a job on Mitchell. The difference in class was noticable.
Hopefully, Mitchell can come back from this a better fighter, but he has to box with his head, not his heart.
He walked straight into the trap set by Katsidis, and before he knew it, he was rocked backwards with a good right. followed by a succession of other punches.

Maybe the venue and the crowd got to him.
