Ireland aim to end a run of seven straight defeats against France to launch their first Six Nations campaign under Declan Kidney in style in Dublin.

The Irish won only two matches in 2008, leading to a fourth-place finish and the exit of ex-coach Eddie O'Sullivan.

Fly-half Paddy Wallace moves to inside centre as Ireland chase their first Six Nations win over France since 2003.

For France, Sebastien Tillous-Borde and Lionel Beuaxis form a half-back pairing at Test level for the first time.

Kidney, who led Munster to two Heineken Cup triumphs, took over as Ireland coach following O'Sullivan's exit last March.

O'Sullivan resigned after the disappointing finish to last year's Six Nations, their worst return since the competition was expanded to include Italy in 2000.

Kidney did not take charge until after the summer tour, which saw Ireland produce promising displays against Australia and New Zealand, and in November he saw his side beat Canada and Argentina but lose 22-3 to the All Blacks.

Former Ireland captain Keith Wood believes Ireland's Six Nations title ambitions hinge on Saturday's opening match.

"It's all about momentum and we have the hardest game first, against France," he said. "If we lose it we have no momentum. If we win it then we're in a very good place.

"Ireland have had a boost in confidence over the last couple of months because the provinces have started doing well.

"I had no expectations for Ireland up until three weeks ago, but they do have a chance. They have a settled look about them."

One of Kidney's targets will be to reverse a worrying spell against the world's leading nations.

Following a 51-24 win over Italy in March 2007, they have played 15 Tests against countries ranked in the world's top 10 and won only four.

Kidney has sprung something of a surprise by naming Wallace as skipper Brian O'Driscoll's partner at centre and the success of that combination could prove crucial to Irish hopes at Croke Park.

O'Driscoll, who has led Ireland a record 51 times since 2002, was retained as captain by Kidney at the start of the year despite many expecting Paul O'Connell to take over.

Rob Kearney played on the wing for the autumn Tests but moves to full-back against the French, while Stephen Ferris will be eager to impress as he makes his Six Nations debut at blind-side flanker.

Jamie Heaslip retains his position at number eight despite pressure from the fit-again Denis Leamy.

Ireland have lost their last five encounters against France, and they last tasted victory in a 15-12 win at Lansdowne Road in 2003.

Since then, they have lost three times in Paris and twice in Dublin, the most recent defeat being a 26-21 reverse at the Stade de France last year.

France were third in the 2008 Six Nations but coach Marc Lievremont says he is happy to be fielding a full-strength team for the first time in his tenure.

Although Tillous-Borde and Beuaxis form a new Test partnership, they were part of the side which won the Under-21 World Cup in 2006.

Florian Fritz comes in at centre and Clement Poitrenaud has been recalled at full-back.

Maxime Medard displaces Cedric Heymans on the wing and Imanol Harinordoquy comes in for Louis Picamoles at number eight.

Coach Lievremont has urged his players to liberate themselves and fulfil their potential.

"Our ambition is to play our own game and win. I told the players to free themselves and show their potential."

The French coach said that after a year in charge he was approaching the first game of the championship "with more demands, more expectations and more hopes".

"More conviction too that this squad is strong, consistent, able to play good rugby and to beat anybody," Lievremont added.

Tillous-Borde selected for France

bbcsports

France have named Sebastien Tillous-Borde at scrum-half for Saturday's RBS Six Nations opener against Ireland at Croke Park.

The Castres player is selected ahead of Morgan Parra, while Florian Fritz comes in at centre and Clement Poitrenaud is recalled at full-back.

Poitrenaud's inclusion means Maxime Medard moves to the wing, where he displaces Cedric Heymans.

Imanol Harinordoquy takes over at number eight from Louis Picamoles.

Sale's Sebastien Chabal retains his place in the second row, while Nicolas Mas is surprisingly left on the bench - Benoit Lecouls is preferred as prop.

Tillous-Borde and Lionel Beauxis, both 23, will be half-back partners at Test level for the first time, but have played together at age-group level since they were 16 and won the Under-21 World Cup in 2006.

"Tillous-Borde has the athletic dimension to compete with the Irish," said coach Marc Lievremont.

"It's the first time we can rely on Beauxis and we are delighted he is back. It would be wrong to think he is only a kicker of the ball. He has got everything to become the great French fly-half for years to come."

Beauxis, who has 12 caps, was thrust into the limelight during the 2007 World Cup when Lievremont's predecessor Bernard Laporte handed him the number 10 jersey ahead of Frederic Michalak and David Skrela for the quarter-final against New Zealand.

The French beat the favourites 20-18 in Cardiff, but Beauxis was then sidelined for most of last season by a series of injuries.

Tillous-Borde, known in the French squad as "Little Byron" for his resemblance in style and build to the former All Black scrum-half Byron Kelleher at Toulouse, has just four caps.

Beauxis, a man of few words, has been nicknamed "Bernardo" after Zorro's mute servant.

The two young men are approaching Saturday's Croke Park clash without fear.

"It's true we haven't been tested together at the highest level but we have known each other for a long time," Tillous-Borde said.

"Saturday's match is a real challenge but to play alongside Lionel gives me a lot of confidence."

On their last visit to Dublin in 2007, a late Vincent Clerc try gave France a 20-17 victory which denied Ireland an attempt at a Grand Slam.

Kearney fit to start for Ireland thumbs up

bbcsports

Rob Kearney has been passed fit to start for Ireland in their Six Nations opener against France on Saturday.

The in-form Leinster full-back had been on crutches after twisting an ankle during training on Tuesday.

But Kearney, who has switched to full-back after playing wing in the autumn, has had intensive physiotherapy and passed a fitness test on Friday.

Geordan Murphy had been on stand-by to start but remains on the bench, with Girvan Dempsey now not required.

The experienced Dempsey, who has 82 caps, was in line to join the replacements if Kearney was unfit.

Luke Fitzgerald and Tommy Bowe were selected on the wing with Paddy Wallace partnering captain Brian O'Driscoll at centre.

Ireland (13) 30
Tries: Heaslip, O'Driscoll, D'Arcy Cons: O'Gara 3 Pens: O'Gara 3

France (10) 21
Tries: Harinordoquy, Medard Con: Beauxis Drop-goals: Beauxis 2 Pen: Beauxis

Ireland recovered from a slow start to claim a magnificent win over a battling France side in a thrilling RBS Six Nations opener at Croke Park.

Imanol Harinordoquy's early score helped France into a 7-3 lead but Tommy Bowe's break set up a Jamie Heaslip try which turned the game Ireland's way.

Leading 13-10 at the break, Brian O'Driscoll's try extended Ireland's lead only for Maxime Medard to reply.

But Gordon D'Arcy's late try finally broke French resolve.

After the earlier lacklustre encounter at Twickenham, this contest lit up the Six Nations and the 80,000 plus crowd in Dublin as Ireland claimed their first win in eight attempts against the French.

O'Gara struck Ireland ahead with a third-minute penalty but France quickly regrouped to put the home side under pressure.

France's gameplan was clear. They were determined to run at the opposition defence and the Irish were rescued in the seventh minute when Thierry Dusautoir knocked on just short of the line.

More French attacks followed but desperate Irish defence, and a couple of impressive catches by Rob Kearney, kept the visitors at bay.

But the French got their reward as another typically sweeping move was finished off by the recalled Harinordoquy in the 14th minute, although there was a hint of a forward pass by Julien Malzieu.

Beauxis added the conversion to put France 7-3 ahead.

O'Gara's penalty, straight after the restart, left only a point between the teams but France were controlling the game with the Irish living off scraps.

A tight forward drive into French territory yielded a chance to gave the Irish an undeserved lead in the 31st minute but O'Gara was off-target from 45 metres.

But Ireland were suddenly ahead on 34 minutes as Bowe's break put the French defence on the backfoot.

Heaslip weaved his way past two challenges to charge over the French line.

O'Gara's conversion increased Ireland's lead to 13-7 as the home side held the initiative for the first time in the match.

If the French were rattled, they weren't showing it and a Sebastien Chabal charge had the Irish defence backpedalling a minute later.

On the stroke of half-time, Lionel Beauxis struck a drop-goal which cut the Irish lead to three points at the break.

The first score after the break went to the Irish as O'Driscoll brushed past Beauxis' poor tackle to score the kind of try which was been missing from the Irish captain's armoury in recent times.

O'Gara's conversion extended the Irish lead to 20-10 as the home side appeared to have seized the initiative.

But once again, French responded as Harinordoquy pounced on some scrappy Irish play to set up an attack finished off by Medard's try.

The French winger touched down after getting the luck of the bounce from Beauxis' chip over the home defence.

Beauxis missed the conversion but his second drop-goal of the day cut Ireland's lead to 20-18.

But just as the match threatened to slip away from Irish, they responded to strike the decisive blow.

A forwards drive saw the home side move deep into French territory and the attack was finished off by replacement D'Arcy sniping his way over the line to celebrate his return to the international stage.

O'Gara's conversion extended Ireland's lead to 27-18 but there was only a score between the teams when Beauxis landed a penalty four minutes from time.

At that stage, memories of Vincent Clerc's late try two years ago loomed large for Irish fans but O'Gara's immediate penalty eased home nerves.

Managed to see this game around my sisters, and I thought the  ROI  played very well.  thumbs up
