Fabio Capello has revealed he wants to continue as England manager until 2012.

A get-out clause could allow him to quit his £6 million-a-year deal after the World Cup, but he wants to stay until the next European Championship.

"I hope to still be there in 2012," he said. "It depends on the Football Association and results at the World Cup of course, but I am really happy."

Capello, 63, also revealed his pleasure at the progress of Wayne Rooney, describing his form as "fantastic".

Rooney's nine goals in the qualifying campaign helped England progress to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with an impressive nine wins out of 10.

And the Italian has been heartened by his performances for Manchester United this season which have seen him score 21 times.

"Rooney has improved a lot during the last two years and this season he has been fantastic," said Capello.

"He has been United's leader on the pitch this season. It is not easy to improve but he has taken his game to another level. For me, he has improved in every area.

"He is showing a new maturity and is scoring goals, which is good for him, Manchester United and England."

Capello said he identified Rooney's need to be in more goalscoring positions after a few games with England. And with Manchester United often using him as a lone striker this term, he said the move had paid dividends.

"He was playing too far from goal. It needed to change," added Capello.

"Now he is playing closer to goal - and scoring. His goal in the Carling Cup against Manchester City was in an area where I want him to be. That is where he can be a dangerous player."

Since being appointed England boss in 2007 there have been fears that the former AC Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid manager could miss the day-to-day work with a club.

But with the draw for the 2012 European Championship being made next week, Capello has moved to dismiss any perceived discontent.

"I like my job," he said. "I like being England manager and I hope after the World Cup I will still be manager.

"Being England manager makes me happy. I like living in London and so does my wife.

"I don't think about not being the England manager. The football in England is exciting, the Premier League is good and I enjoy working with the English players."

Fine by me  thumbs up
