They're finally gonna start filming 'The Hobbit', with luck.

Quote
The Guardian

It has been a road almost as long as Bilbo Baggins's legendary journey to the Lonely Mountain to battle Smaug the dragon. But according to reports, The Hobbit, Peter Jackson's long-awaited prequel to The Lord of the Rings, has finally been greenlit.

Deadline reported on Friday that shooting could begin as early as February 2011, after studios MGM and New Line, which both have an interest in the two-film project, agreed on a production schedule. There remains the issue, however, of a dispute between producers and unions, which have called on actors to boycott the films if they are shot in New Zealand. Furthermore, MGM remains in the middle of a financial crisis that could see it merged with other companies to help pay off its estimated $3.7bn debt.

On a more positive note, Martin Freeman was reportedly moving closer to winning the role of Bilbo Baggins, while former Dr Who star David Tennant and Irish actorMichael Fassbender were in line to join the cast in unknown roles. Another Irishman, James Nesbitt, was tipped to play Bofur the dwarf, one of the 12 bearded homunculi who arrive at Baggins's hobbit hole with Gandalf in JRR Tolkien's classic fantasy tale.

Both films will be shot in 3D, something that original director Guillermo Del Toro had fought against. Jackson, originally on board as producer but now taking the reins following the Mexican film-maker's departure, appears to have accepted the inevitability of such a move. The first Hobbit film will hit cinemas in December 2012, with the second arriving a year later.

Looks interesting:

Screen Daily

Pathé’s $6m Africa United is an ambitious UK-South Africa-Rwanda co-production which filmed across three countries. Sarah Cooper reports from Lake Tanganyika in Burundi, where it was the first international project to shoot.

“There is a mirror between the story of how this production has come together and the story of the film. We dared to dream that it might be possible, just like the kids in Africa United dared to dream,” says producer Mark Blaney between takes at the idyllic Bora Bora beach bar on the banks of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi.

Africa United tells the story of three Rwandan children — Dudu, his sister Beatrice and his friend Fabrice — who embark on an epic journey across seven African countries to attend the opening ceremony of the football World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa. Along the way they encounter everything from hippos to heists, find new friends and face up to issues such as Aids and child prostitution.

Currently in post, the UK-South Africa-Rwanda co-production completed its ambitious shoot across three African countries in early April, with first-time feature director Debs Gardner-Paterson at the helm.

The project originated with Rwandan film-maker Eric Kabera, whose credits include the 2001 drama 100 Days about the worst atrocities of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Kabera wanted a project which showed Rwanda in a different light and wrote an initial script about a boy who makes a journey from Rwanda to the World Cup.

While Kabera was in Los Angeles pitching the script in November 2008, his Rwandan colleague Ayuub Kasasas Mago sent it to Mark Blaney and Jackie Sheppard of UK-based production company Footprint Films, whom he had met that year at the Rwandan Film Festival, which Kabera set up in 2005.

I've only seen the trailer.

I bet that it's a bit cack. I won't be in a hurry to see it.

He's been good in the likes of 'Gladiator' and 'Master And Commander' but they are overdoing the Russell Crowe 'historical action hero' thing now.
