The Football League have given Portsmouth special dispensation to sign up to three players, despite being under a transfer embargo.

The Fratton Park club, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are currently in administration and under a transfer embargo until an appeal is heard.

However, as the club's squad is now three players short of the minimum 20, the Football League have made a special allowance.

Centre-back Ibrahima Sonko is set to be one new arrival at the club having already agreed a season-long loan deal, while manager Steve Cotterill is also targeting goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown, who was previously released by Pompey, and trialist defender Stephen Jordan.

"The Football League is working with the club to help it reduce its wage bill," a Football League spokesman told the Portsmouth News.

"As part of this process, it has given the club permission to bring in replacement players on a case-by-case basis."

Mind you I should add, I feel sorry for the fans, in the main a very good bunch, if yuo take away the 6.27 firm
