Former Netherlands international midfielder Edgar Davids has joined Championship side Crystal Palace on a pay-as-you-play deal.

The 37-year-old had been without a club since leaving Ajax in 2008.

Palace had a transfer embargo lifted as they came out of administration and signed three players on Friday.

Tottenham striker Jonathan Obika, 19, and Ipswich forward Pablo Counago, 31, have both joined Davids at Selhurst Park on season-long loan deals.

"It is an exciting time for me. I want to enjoy football and show what I can do," Davids told the club website.

"We spoke to Edgar earlier in the week," said Palace manager George Burley.

"He has been training with Ajax but now it's good to see us agree terms with him."

Davids, who has also had spells with AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Tottenham, won 74 caps for the Netherlands.

OK he's a big name, but whay has he been out of football for 2 years, and to sign him on a pay-as-you-play deal says they do not have much faith in him really  huh

Could be a good signing.

Sounds like he did well in the Pompey game.

If he is going to come in and start dictating where he wants to play, he is going to fail

Davids calls time on Palace

Edgar Davids has revealed he is ending his stint with Crystal Palace after just over two months with the Championship club.

The veteran Dutchman joined Palace in August on a pay-as-you-play deal and has been used at left-back by George Burley.

He started seven games for the Eagles, but rumours had surfaced in recent weeks that he was ready to call time on his spell at Selhurst Park.

The 37-year-old has now confirmed he will be leaving Burley's strugglers and has thanked the club for the opportunity.

Great experience

"Today I have decided that my journey as a player of Crystal Palace FC has come to an end," said Davids on his official website.

"I want to thank all the people who supported me and gave me one of the greatest experiences of my life."

When Davids missed last month's 4-3 defeat at Preston North End, reports he had played his final game for the club began to emerge.

Burley later stated the former Ajax midfielder had missed that game due to a virus and he went on to start the 3-0 home defeat by Swansea City.

That appearance on 30th October proved to be Davids' last for Palace and he leaves the club bottom of the Championship table.

never quite hit it off there did he
