Shrewsbury Town have hit back at claims from FA Cup opponents Southampton that their priority in the tie is financial.

The FA has backed Southampton in slashing ticket prices, a move opposed by Shrewsbury because they would get less money from the shared gate.

"Things said on their website about us just "lining our pockets" disrespects us and the FA Cup," Town manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"You talk about things, you compromise, but you don't ridicule another club."

Southampton's website claimed that Shrewsbury wanted to charge fans full price for the FA Cup first round game at St Mary's in "an over ambitious move designed only to line their pockets" and "cash in" on the tie.

"I'm not sure whether they still think they're a Manchester United or a Chelsea - they're playing among the smaller fry of the Football League now," Turner added.

"To tell us to remember where we are and the standard of the opposition bugs me.

"They're only about 15 places above us and they're a club who've fallen on hard times, so if I were them I'd be a bit more respectful to other teams in the League, especially where they find themselves at the moment."

I think it only makes sense to cut the price of the tickets, especially at this stage, and the Shrews should be greatful for what cut they get.

They shouldn't complain. They still get 50% of whatever.

Edit: 50% of gate receipts.

Difficult because had they sold out at full price then they have lost out haven't they? Of course I fully expect that a first round tie against a glamour club like Shrewsbury Town isn't going to have Saints fans clamouring for tickets so reducing ticket price to attract more makes sense.
What Shrewsbury want to do is shut up and do their talking on the football field. put out Southampton and then they get an extra round of gate money. Then when they have put the saints out, then state their case.
