Darlington boss Mark Cooper has revealed the club missed out on a major target in the form of Oldham Athletic defender Sean Gregan.

Cooper had been seeking cover for the injured midfielder Michael Brough and an experienced central defender but the club were pipped to Gregan's signature.

"Sean Gregan has gone to Fleetwood, we were very interested in him, sometimes money talks," Cooper told BBC Tees.

"That and the fact he's living in Preston which is closer to Fleetwood."

One player who has opted to try his luck at The Arena is Northern Ireland international winger Keith Gillespie.

The 35-year-old, who began his career at Manchester United, and played for North East neighbours Newcastle United, left Glentoran at the end of last season.

Meanwhile Cooper is set to take his Quakers side to Mossley in their FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie on Saturday.

During his management career the former Tamworth and Kettering boss presided over some impressive cup scalps, and led the latter club to the fourth round of the FA Cup and a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Premier League side Fulham in 2008-09.

"The boot's on the other foot now for me," Cooper continued.

"We're a so-called bigger club going to a smaller club, I've seen it all before and if you're not mentally up for the game you get beaten.

"We've got to make sure we're up for it."
