For those who don't understand perms below is a brief explanation of how a perm works.
Suppose you had chosen 5 football teams from different leagues to bet on, that you were sure were going to win, on a particular day: Arsenal, Brighton, Chelsea, Doncaster and Everton (say). You might be tempted to try an accumulator. (That is, your original stake is multiplied by the odds on each winning team). If all the teams win then you stand to win a substantial amount of money. But of course the drawback here is, if just one team lost you would have lost the bet. This is where the perm comes in handy.
The great thing about a perm is, it provides an excellent way of leveraging your stake but with less risk than an accumulator. To continue with our example... If you were less sure of all 5 teams winning but confident 3 or more of the 5 teams were about to win then you could wager a 3x5 perm (combination). Similarly, if you thought at least 4 teams were a dead cert then you could bet a 4x5 perm.
Taking the most popular perm of all, the 3x5 perm, we will now see how this works. In a 3x5 perm there are 10 possible combinations. Using the teams we have already chosen: (A)rsenal, (B)righton, ?helsea, (D)oncaster and (E)verton the 10 combinations are as follows: 1. A,B,C. 2.A,B,D 3.A,B,E 4.B,C,D 5.B,C,E 6.C,D,E. 7.C,D,A 8. D,E,A, 9. D,E,B 10.A,C,E
Now lets suppose each team has the following odds: Arsenal 1/5 (1.2) Brighton 3/1 (4.0) Chelsea 1/2 (1.5) Doncaster Evens (2.0) Everton 4/5 (1.8)
The figures in brackets are what are known as decimal odds. (These are becoming increasingly common with online bookmakers). Personally I think they provide a much clearer way of seeing what your potential winnings are. To calculate our winnings from a 3x5 perm for our chosen teams, we need to add each team's odds to the table we have just seen.
To convert traditional odds to decimal all you need to do is convert the fraction to its decimal equivelent and add 1 to the result. So in the case of Everton, using traditional odds, for every pound you bet you would get a return of 4/5ths of a pound (80p) plus the original pound. Using decimal odds you would receive 1.8 times your original stake. The same thing but much clearer I think you'll agree. From here on in we'll use the decimal format.
To then work out the odds for a particular combination just take the decimal odds and multiply them out. So if we take the first combination as winning e.g. Aresenal,Brighton &Chelsea or ABC then the odds would be 1.2 x 4.0 x 1.5 = 7.2 Ok so the others work out at 9.6, 8.64, 12.0, 10.8, 5.4, 3.6, 4.32, 14.4 & 3.24 respectively( e.g.2 throught to 10.)
For simplicities sake, we will assume that we have staked a total of ?10.00. As there are 10 sub bets in a 3x5 perm it follows that ?1.00 will be allocated to each sub bet. In order to work out your winnings, you have just to add up the totals of the sub bets in which all the teams involved have won. If all 5 teams won, then your return from the bet would be:
?7.20+?9.60+?8.64 +?12.00+10.80+5.40+?3.60 +?4.32+?14.40+?3.24 =?79.20
If 4 teams won, then 4 sub bets (those in which all 3 teams have won) would make up your winnings. If just 3 teams won, then 1 sub bet would make up your winnings.
Now you have a better idea of how a perm works.
This will now help if you wish to try the SPL perm coupon or the Premier League coupon.
