Newcastle look set to bolster their midfield options after agreeing terms with FC Twente for the transfer of Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote.

The 24-year-old has passed a medical and is now awaiting a work permit.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton told ESPN: "It's given us a lift. He's a defensive midfielder and is a good signing."

Tiote was part of the Twente side which won the Dutch title last season and played in all three of his country's games at the World Cup.

Hughton added that the acquisition was a crucial one with Alan Smith the squad's only defensive midfielder.

"We feel it's such an important area in this division," the manager said after the team's 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa. "Hopefully there will be one or two more signings before the window closes."

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson said transfer speculation surrounding Javier Mascherano led to his omission from the team beaten by Manchester City.

The 26-year-old was not in the Reds squad as they lost 3-0 and Hodgson said he might not pick the midfielder until the transfer window ends on 31 August.

Hodgson told BBC Sport: "His head is being turned by Barcelona, who are making overtures to him.

"But until an offer matches our valuation he will stay with us."

He said the sticking-point with Barcelona was that the amount offered was "way, way below" Liverpool's reported £25m valuation of Mascherano.

Hodgson continued: "The player still remains unhappy. He is not interested in the justice of the fee, he just wants to move.

"It makes it uncomfortable for us. It's something to be resolved but certainly Javier was not in the right frame of mind so it was better to play with Lucas and Steven Gerrard, who certainly were committed to the cause."

Before the defeat at Eastlands, Hodgson said he hoped matters would be resolved before the end of the transfer window so he could pick the Argentine again.

Some reports circulating on Monday evening suggested the Catalan giants were offering only £12m for a player who cost Liverpool £18m three and a half seasons ago.

Hodgson has been consistent in conceding Liverpool would let Mascherano leave provided they received the right offer, honouring an agreement the player struck 12 months ago when Barcelona first expressed their interest.

Manchester City forward Robinho has rejected a transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce and is holding out for a move to Italy or Spain.

The Brazilian wants to find a new club before Tuesday's transfer deadline and City had given permission for talks.

However, the 26-year-old told globoesporte.com: "With all due respect to Turkish football, I'm not going to play there at the moment.

"The only thing I'll say is that I'll carry on in Europe, in Italy or Spain."

Robinho has not featured for City in the early part of this season since returning from a six-month loan spell at his boyhood club Santos.

Birmingham have confirmed they have made an improved bid for Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia.

Blues manager Alex McLeish did not reveal the size of the offer, with the club already having had an £8m bid rejected for the 24-year-old Frenchman.

"We have made another bid for Charles and we wait to see if it's successful or not," said the Scottish boss.

"We're awaiting Wigan's response. At the same time we're in the hands of the gods in terms of the other offers."

Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Dutch club PSV Eindhoven's Mexico international left-back Carlos Salcido.

PSV told BBC Sport that the 30-year-old Salcido, who has also been linked with Liverpool, has still to agree personal terms in a move reportedly worth £1.6m.

Liverpool have been holding talks with Fulham over the possibility of signing their Fulham left-back Paul Konchesky.

Fulham boss Mark Hughes said: "It's not a foregone conclusion Paul goes because we're trying to bring someone else in."

PSV would not specify the length of the contract that Salcido had been offered by Fulham.

Earlier this week the London club confirmed the signing of 23-year-old Algerian defender Rafik Halliche from Benfica for an undisclosed fee.

Harry Redknapp has revealed Tottenham are not prepared to meet Sevilla's "crazy" asking price for Luis Fabiano.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has enquired about Fabiano, the 29-year-old Brazilian striker who has said he would "love" to move to White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Redknapp said: "He's a player I like but they're talking crazy money for him, for a player that age.

"One year left on his contract, in excess of £24-25m, the figures don't stack up. That wouldn't be a goer."

Fabiano caught the eye at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, thriving alongside Robinho in Brazil's attack and finding the net three times before his country were eventually eliminated by the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia will not be joining Birmingham after failing to agree personal terms.

The prolonged transfer looked sealed when Wigan accepted Birmingham's "club-record fee" for the French winger.

But talks between the 24-year-old and the Blues "broke down irrevocably", according to the St Andrews outfit.

"We did everything that was asked of us and then the goalposts were moved at the last minute," said Birmingham manager Alex McLeish.

"It was very important to us as a club to stick to our principals and look after the long-term interests of Birmingham City as we are custodians of the club.

"We remain ambitious and committed to adding extra quality to the playing squad but this deal became one that was not in the interests of the club.

"The Board worked with me extremely hard to try and get this one over the line and I thank them for their support."

A statement on the club's website added: "Blues remain absolutely determined to signing players who want to come to the West Midlands and play for Birmingham for all the right reasons and senior club personnel will continue to work extremely hard to that end."

Tottenham have completed the signing of goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa on a season-long loan from Spartak Moscow.

Quote
The 31-year-old Croatian shot-stopper has been a regular for his country over the last decade, winning 80 caps and representing Croatia in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as the European Championship in 2008.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has been chasing the keeper's signature for some time, as revealed by skysports.comearlier in the month.

Redknapp is hoping the experienced Croat will provide cover and competition for current goalkeepers Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini.

Pletikosa began his career with Hajduk Split and made more than 172 appearances for his hometown club before making the switch to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2003.

After four years with the Ukrainian outfit he moved to Spartak and has now opted to join Spurs until the end of the campaign.

I don't mean to be rude here super duper, but my grandmother would be competition for Gomes. He is rubbish and I don't know why Spurs keep him?
They would be far better with Cudicini in the net.
