sky sports

Sky Sports News understands Tottenham Hotspur missed the deadline to finalise the paperwork for the signing of Rafael van der Vaart.

Spurs made a late bid to bring in Holland international Van der Vaart and tried to complete the deal before Tuesday's 6pm cut-off.

However, it is understood that technical issues prevented the necessary paperwork from being completed and Spurs have now requested special dispensation from the Premier League to add the midfielder to their squad.

The club were not initially expected to be particularly active on deadline day, but the sudden availability of Van der Vaart at a knock-down price of £8million prompted Spurs to act.

Manager Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports News on Tuesday evening that he was hopeful of signing Van der Vaart and conceded the club could not pass up such an opportunity.

Quality player
"I think he was going to Bayern Munich yesterday for about £18million, but suddenly it became an awful lot cheaper," said Redknapp.

"He is available now for about £8million. He is a quality player. He is a Dutch international and a great footballer.

"For that sort of money, he is a top player and he will improve us for sure. We have made the effort, whether we can pull it off or not we will have to see.

"I am hopeful. It could happen. It was a last-minute job. When I came in this morning it certainly wasn't something I was looking to do."

He added: "He is a great passer of the ball, he is a top footballer. He will join in here and play the way we like to play, he would be a big plus for us.

"He looked like he was going for £18million but then the fee came crashing down because the deadline got close. If the chairman can pull it off, I think he will have got a real bargain."

Two things here

First- if you miss the deadline then toughsh*t, you've had a bloody month for god sake, should have got it done sooner.
Second and more important:- Why has his price suddenly dropped from £18m to £8 and why they want rid of him. A word to the wise you get what you pay for and he is that price and they want rid because he is not as good as you think. Well I suppose in that case he might fit in at Spurs or Liverpool. laugh

Tottenham have secured the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart for £8m.

Spurs moved to sign the 27-year-old Netherlands international two hours before the transfer window closed at 1800 BST on Tuesday.

But the club's urgency to file the necessary paperwork before the deadline was hampered by a technical problem.

However, the Premier League sanctioned the signing after investigating Tottenham's claims on Wednesday.

Spurs faced an anxious wait as the Premier League assessed their claims with the 1700 BST cut-off point on Wednesday fast approaching for clubs to submit their 25-man senior squads for the first half of the season.

Van der Vaart becomes Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp's second deadline-day signing following the capture of Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa on a season-long loan from Russian club Spartak Moscow.

Only got a game at the world cup as Robben was injured. I don't rate the lad at all, and there is definately a hint of desperation in that his value dropped by £ 10 million or 55% in two hours.

I think the true story was that when the move to Bayern Munich fell through, Real wanted rid, so sent a mail to all of the Premier League clubs saying that he was available. No one else wanted him, but I expect Harry said put a cheeky bid in of £ 8 million thinking that he wouldn't get him. As everyone had walked off the pitch, Harry has been left long and wrong.

I was listening to TalkSport last night and they were having a dig about the facts surrounding this.

When all is said and done it was outside the time scales for transfers and the wrong side of the deadline. Spurs are claiming technical difficulties hindered them and now it's gone through.
So at the end of the day then the rules have been bent to help/suit/benefit Spurs.

Now my opinion on this is black and white I'm afriad and technical difficulties or not it's outside the deadline so should not be allowed. As one presenter said does that now mean Arsenal can now sign a goalkeeper today and say it was technical difficulties and that go through, it should as they have done it for one team.
I don't care what technical difficulties they had it's hard luck, they should have sorted it all out far sooner. The problem here will come if say he pops up and scores a goal right at the end of the season that seals say fourth place and then what. The team in fifth would be well miffed.
All Spurs fans will be on the other side of the fence to me, no doubt, but before you scream off consider this, had it been Arsenal who had done this and got away with it you would sitting over here with me extolling the fact that they have cheated and as strong as it sounds Tottenham have cheated and it will, for me, sully anything they win this season if they play him.

I bet it is cos they are in the Champions League as well which has allowed them to get away with it. The FA will want teams in Europe to do well I suppose so will bend the rules to help them.
Have to say I think it's wrong that it was allowed.

i got one word for you that all of you are: and thats butthurt.

you're just jelous becasue only in your club's wildest dreams can they land a player like van der vaart (ok to be fair this proberly excludes arsenal). and i dont think there was any wrong doing in the trasfer of van der vaart. now if it was your club that couldn't sign a player which would properly be a key player beacause of technical difficulties, wouldn't you complain? so stop complaining, the deals been done and dusted.

I don't ever remeber calling you in the thread super duper please bear that in mind.
It is an opinion I expressed and it's mine and while England is a democracy I'm entitled to it as you are yours.
Just to answer your second point my friend I support Darlington who are in the BSP, we can't afford Van de Vaart's boots nevermind the player. He is way beyond our league my friend so jealousy does not enter into it. I would be saying the same thing whichever team had done the dirty deed.
The other thing you need to remember is that after last times debacle over the Arshavin transfer the transfer deadline was moved to 6pm to stop it happening again. The FA decided this and then they go and do it again. Sorry but they moved it to 6pm to stop what Spurs did.
Oh and I lie equal blame with the muffins at the FA who quite frankly couldn't organise a pi*s up in a brewery.

how? we sgined VDV within the rules, so its not technicly cheating. I don't see anything wrong with the transfer, you would want to sign a player over the deadline is you had technical difficulties.
