A good result in Europe tonight and a decent performance at the weekend could lead to the caretaker, Ronald MacDonald getting the job. In all fairness, he would be the cheapest option, he has inside knowledge of the squad having brought a lot of the younger players through the youth academy and he would have the support from the fans (to start with at least).

The problem with Macdonald is he isn't a big name etc. Do you not think the fans and Lerner would want a bigger name that will attract the type of player Villa need to build on from O'Neill?

IMO, Villa should give the gig to MacDonald on a short-term deal, say 'til the end of 2010 ? If he's up for it.

He'd have the chance to have a go and the club would have some time to assess him and also look for a replacement, should it go wrong.

US coach Bob Bradley interested in Aston Villa vacancy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/8934039.stm

United States coach Bob Bradley would be "honoured" to talk to Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner about being their next boss after Martin O'Neill's exit.

Bradley's team impressed at the World Cup and he has been mentioned as a serious contender for the vacant job.

"I'd be honoured to have a conversation with Randy Lerner," Bradley told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek.

"I've had no contact with him. There have been talks with my representatives to find out the situation."

O'Neill left Villa after four years in charge just days before the start of the new Premier League season, with disagreements over transfer policy and the sale of midfielder James Milner to Manchester City thought to have been points of disagreement with Villa's American owner.

Bradley's contract with the US national team runs until the end of the year, and he said although he did not want his achievements in that job to be overlooked or disregarded in any way, he had "always been excited by the possibility of managing in Europe".

He added: "Following the World Cup there have been some discussions with US Soccer about what the future holds and we will continue those discussions in the next few weeks and we will see what happens.

"I think that there are challenges on both sides. I have always been excited by the possibility of being a manager in Europe, but we're proud of the work we have put in with the US team and it's important to see that as a challenge."

Reserve team manager Kevin MacDonald has been in temporary charge at Villa Park since O'Neill's sudden departure.

Bradley said he thought Villa were dealing with things sensibly, and this approach showed that Lerner was providing a good environment for whoever got the job.

"Aston Villa have taken a good stance," stated Bradley.

"They are patient and have a very good man in Kevin MacDonald, who is highly respected in the club. They are probably putting a list together as well as making sure Kevin has the time to consider his future."

When asked if he would be interested in the job, Bradley said: "Of course. Villa is a massive club, with a great history and a great following. Those opportunities would of course be of interest. It's pretty clear that Randy Lerner has done a solid job where tradition is kept."

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and former Villa captain Gareth Southgate have also been linked with the managerial role.

Of course he is, but are they looking at him  huh

Aston Villa caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald has conceded that the club's Europa League exit could influence his chances of getting the job permanently.

MacDonald could not prevent Villa from slipping to a 3-2 home defeat against Rapid Vienna, 4-3 on aggregate.

Asked if the loss was a major blow to his hopes of securing the post, he was realistic in his appraisal.

"It may have an influence," he replied. "But I must stress it is the media who have put me up as first choice."

Former reserve-team coach MacDonald has been at the helm since Martin O'Neill's abrupt departure on 9 August.

Ex-England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, former Villa star Gareth Southgate and United States coach Bob Bradley are all believed to be in the running as a long-term replacement.

Villa to seek manager with Premier League experience

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/8953889.stm

Aston Villa have appeared to rule out caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald taking the vacant manager's position.

MacDonald has been in charge since Martin O'Neill resigned on 9 August and said after Sunday's win over Everton he is undecided about taking the job.

But Villa said they wanted to appoint someone in the near future with Premier League experience with MacDonald to continue "until that time".

MacDonald has seen his side win two out of three Premier League games.

But Villa were also thumped 6-0 by Newcastle and knocked out of the Europa League, with star midfielder James Milner also leaving the club for Manchester City.

Even though MacDonald said he would speak to Villa owner Randy Lerner by Tuesday to let him know whether he wanted to take the job on a permanent basis, the club's chief executive Paul Faulkner issued a statement on Sunday evening to explain the board's plans.

In it, Faulkner seemed to underline that MacDonald was appointed as a caretaker only and the club would appoint a new manager in the "near future" following an interview process.

But the insistence on someone with experience of managing in the Premier League could also spell the end for United States coach Bob Bradley's hopes who has admitted he would be interested in the Villa job.

Other names linked with the post have included former Ajax boss Ronald Koeman.

"We are conscious that we have steered clear of openly communicating our thoughts on the search for a permanent manager until this time, as we felt that to do so would undermine both Kevin's and the players' efforts to focus on preparing for these games," the statement said.

"To date, we have immersed ourselves in the process of appointing a new manager and clearly identifying the key criteria this person must meet.

"Two of the traits we believe are of crucial importance are that candidates have experience of managing in the Premier League and a strategy for building on the existing strengths in our current squad.

"We have thoroughly researched potential candidates and have reached out to a variety of contacts we have within the game for advice and guidance, as well as keeping key staff at Villa Park informed and focused.

"We will now start the process of interviewing candidates we believe meet the key criteria required to manage Aston Villa with a view to making an appointment in the near future.

"Kevin MacDonald will continue as caretaker manager until that time.

"Finally, we wish to make clear that our relative inactivity in the transfer market this window in no way reflects a change in direction or dilution of ambition for the club, but rather our reluctance to make decisions on players without a permanent manager in place."

After the 1-0 win over Everton at Villa Park thanks to a Luke Young goal, MacDonald said: "I've enjoyed being able to organise things but I still don't know if it is for me or not.

"I will now have the chance to collate everything that has happened in the past two weeks and I've got to believe I'm good enough myself. That is what I will think about."

Villa are currently fourth in the Premier League table after three games having also beaten West Ham 3-0 on the opening day of the season.

Former Ajax boss Ronald Koeman has said he is interested in becoming Aston Villa's new manager and claims the club contacted his agent last week.

Villa are yet to name Martin O'Neill's successor, with Kevin MacDonald currently occupying the role on a caretaker basis.

"Of course I am interested to listen to everybody," Koeman told BBC Sport.

Earlier on Tuesday, MacDonald also said he wished to be considered for the job on a permanent basis.

MacDonald had been undecided as to whether he wanted the role, but has now put himself into consideration.

The 49-year-old reserve-team coach has overseen the first five games of the season after manager O'Neill's sudden resignation in July.

Alan Curbishley is among the candidates to be interviewed for the vacant manager's post at Aston Villa, BBC Sport understands.

The 52-year-old has been out of the game since parting company with West Ham in September 2008.

Former Ajax boss Ronald Koeman said earlier this week that he is interested in the job vacated by Martin O'Neill.

Caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald has also indicated he would like to be considered for the role.

Reserve-team coach MacDonald, 49, has overseen the first five games of the season after manager O'Neill's sudden resignation in July.

Villa have said that they want to appoint a manager with Premier League experience.

Curbishley spent 15 years with Charlton but moved to West Ham in December 2006.

I personally would have thought that was not the right move for Villa. I bet the fans would be expecting somebody bigger than Curbishley, no disrespect to the guy. If they get him in it will send big signals in my mind that they have a tight budget and are going to start moving back from what they have achieved recently.
