Chelsea have made a ?19.7m bid for Real Madrid's Brazilian striker Robinho, BBC Sport understands.

In a statement on their website, Chelsea confirmed they have made an offer for Robinho, although they did not reveal the size of their bid.

The 24-year-old former Santos star played a key role in helping Real secure the Spanish title last season.

But he is believed to be keen to join fellow countryman Luiz Felipe Scolari at Stamford Bridge.

BBC Sport revealed in July that the Blues were monitoring Robinho, although media reports that they had made a ?48m bid were wide of the mark.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said on Saturday that, although talks with Real had stalled, he remains hopeful that a deal for Robinho would go through.

Kenyon believes Madrid's eagerness to secure a replacement is the only factor preventing him from moving to Stamford Bridge.

"A key issue over buying Robinho has always been that Real are looking for a replacement," he told the club website.

"It is fair to say that is what has been holding up discussions."

Scolari, who took over as Chelsea boss in July, is currently working on bringing in new faces ahead of his first Premier League campaign.

Robinho has previously stated: "It would be a dream for me to work with Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is one of the best coaches in the world.

"I have always spoken highly of him and he has always spoken very highly of me, since well before he was at Chelsea.

"In 2003, when I was unknown in Europe, he called me to play in a charity match. It was brief but it was enough for me to see his style and character."

And Robinho's agent, Wagner Ribeiro, was reported as saying in Spain: "Madrid have failed to value him as he deserves and I do not like the fact that they tried to include him in the Ronaldo deal. Money is not the problem for us now.

What matters for Robinho is to leave the club and play for Scolari at Chelsea."

However, Real president Ramon Calderon insisted the club was not forcing Robinho out of the Bernabeu.

Real say Robinho is not for sale

bbcsports

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is adamant that Chelsea target Robinho will not be leaving the Bernabeu.

Chelsea made a ?19.7m bid for Robinho, 24, on Thursday and he is believed to be keen to join fellow Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari at Stamford Bridge.

But Calderon told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Definitely, he is going to stay with us. The coach (Bernd Schuster) has said he wants him in our team.

"We don't see any possibility of Robinho leaving Real Madrid."

BBC Sport revealed in July that the Blues were monitoring Robinho, although media reports that they had made a ?48m bid were wide of the mark.

Chelsea confirmed on Thursday that they have made a formal offer for the former Santos star.

"We know that Chelsea are interested in signing him," Calderon added.

"I don't mind that other clubs try to sign our players - it's normal, we have very good players. Anyone would like to have one of them for sale.

"But Robinho wants to be with us. He is one of the best players we have in our team and we need him for next season."

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said on 3 August that, although talks with Real had stalled, he remains hopeful that a deal for Robinho would go through.

Kenyon believes Madrid's eagerness to secure a replacement is the only factor preventing him from moving to Stamford Bridge.

"A key issue over buying Robinho has always been that Real are looking for a replacement," he told his club's website.

"What matters for Robinho is to leave the club and play for Scolari at Chelsea."

Ribeiro also told Spanish newspaper Marca from Bogota, where Real are currently on tour: "Robinho is very angry with the way the Madrid bosses are dealing with him.

"He calls me every day to know whether anyone has spoken to me about his future, and I always have to tell him that no one has called.

"I have been trying to speak with someone from the club for three days. Robinho does not understand what is going on."

Apparently Chelski have upped the offer to ?21m+ and still RM say he is not for sale

Seeing as Ronaldo isn't going to them then they won't want to sell him.

Real change Robinho transfer tack

Real Madrid have changed their stance over Robinho's possible transfer and told him they will not keep him against his will if he wants to join Chelsea.

"Real Madrid would never want to retain a player against his wishes," the club said in a statement on their website.

"As a result we have no alternative but to accept his unilateral decision to rescind his contract."

It is unclear if Real will now agree a fee with Chelsea, or if Robinho will have to buy out his ?120m contract.

In Spain all professional players have a "buy-out clause" written into their contracts and can move without their club's agreement, though in practice the player's new club pays that sum.

"Real Madrid have become aware of the declarations by the player and deeply regret their content," Real's statement added.

Earlier on Friday Robinho told Spanish news agency EFE that he wanted to leave Madrid to join Chelsea.

"I want to leave. I've told the president, the directors and the coach. I want to play in the Premier League," said the Brazilian international.

"Chelsea have a great squad, a great team and their offer is good for me and for the team."

Robinho, who can play in a wide attacking position or through the middle, is keen to move to Chelsea to join fellow Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari at Stamford Bridge.

Scolari himself is optimistic that a deal can be done for the player.

"Real Madrid have the player and set the price," said Scolari on Friday. "He is a very good player, a fantastic player who all the coaches in the world like and would want him in their squad."

Earlier in the summer Real were prepared to use Robinho as a makeweight in their pursuit of Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and refused to release the Brazilian for the Olympics.

Robinho added: "I'm telling the truth. I want to leave and I have got the character to tell the press that I'm not aiming to stay at Real.

"It isn't because of money, it is simply because I want to leave. My personal aim is to be the best player in the world and that isn't going to be possible at Real Madrid.

"I've played three seasons at Real Madrid and have given everything.

"I think my period at Real Madrid has come to an end. I hope the directors reach an agreement with Chelsea to resolve my situation as quickly as possible."

The Blues have already had a ?19.7m bid rejected for Robinho, though Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has insisted he is hopeful of concluding the transfer.

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster had previously claimed that Robinho will not be sold at any price, while Calderon told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Definitely, he is going to stay with us. The coach has said he wants him in our team.

Robinho's agent Wagner Ribeiro has accused Madrid of a "failure to value him as he deserves" and that he was unhappy at being included by Madrid as a potential makeweight in any Ronaldo deal.
