Chelsea full-back Jose Bosingwa will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup with Portugal as he requires further surgery on a knee injury.

Bosingwa originally underwent surgery on his left knee after suffering the injury against Aston Villa in October.

The 27-year-old had returned to light training recently but has now been told he needs another operation.

The Portugal international has played 57 games for Chelsea since signing from Porto for £16.2m in May 2008.

Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins told the club website: "Bosingwa will be out for the season and have another operation, so that's him unfortunately, and he'll miss the World Cup as well."

The loss of Bosingwa, who has played nine times for Chelsea this season, is a further blow to boss Carlo Ancelotti, who will also be without first-choice left-back Ashley Cole for another two months.

Cole, who had surgery on a broken ankle in February, will miss the majority of Chelsea's battle for the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, and the 29-year-old also faces a race against time to be fit for England's World Cup squad.
