Newcastle United and England striker Andy Carroll is due to appear in court later charged with assault.

Northumbria Police have refused to release details of the incident which led to the player's arrest.

Carroll, who has just signed a new long-term deal at the club, will appear before Tynedale magistrates.

The 21-year-old helped Newcastle earn promotion back to the Premier League after being relegated to the Championship in 2009.

A brief police statement said: "Andrew Thomas Carroll, 21, previously of Prestwick, Newcastle, has been charged with assault.

"He is due to appear before Tynedale Magistrates this morning."

A car belonging to Newcastle striker Andy Carroll was targeted in an arson attack outside the Northumberland home of club captain Kevin Nolan.

The incident happened on Wednesday, three days after a court ordered the 21-year-old to live with Mr Nolan.

Mr Carroll had appeared before magistrates charged with assaulting his former girlfriend Laurie Henderson.

No-one was hurt in the arson attack. Newcastle United declined to comment on the incident.

Andy Carroll is living with the Newcastle captain on the exclusive Darras Hall estate in Ponteland as part of his bail conditions.

Police said they were called after the pair spotted Carroll's chrome-plated Range Rover on fire on the drive.

A garage door was also daubed with graffiti.

A Northumbria force spokeswoman said: "Police received a report from the fire and rescue service of a fire outside an address in Darras Hall.

"Officers attended and a Range Rover was found to be on fire.

"The fire was extinguished by the fire and rescue service and no-one was injured.

"The garage door of the property was also vandalised.

"Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them."

A spokeswoman for Newcastle United said the club would not comment as the incident was being investigated by the police.

Mr Carroll appeared before Tynedale Magistrates on Monday charged with assaulting 18-year-old Miss Henderson on 17 October.

He was bailed until a further hearing in January, and the court was told he would claim self-defence.

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has admitted assaulting a man in a nightclub.

At Newcastle Crown Court the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to common assault and was fined £1,000. He was also ordered to pay £2,500 compensation.

The court heard he threw his drink over Michael Cook in Newcastle nightclub Blu Bambu in December.

Carroll said his glass accidentally slipped out of his hand and caused a cut to Mr Cook's eyebrow.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of nearly £1,500.

Carroll had earlier denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm - a charge which was dropped when he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence.

The England Under-21 international is a regular in Newcastle United's first team and scored the winning goal in Saturday's Premier League victory over West Ham.

The Gateshead-born player is a product of the club's academy

He has also got a pending case for assaulting an ex girl friend.

He has to mind how he goes now. At 21, he has the chance to be the next Geordie legend. If he carries on progressing on the pitch as he has done over the last couple of years, he will be first choice England centre forward by about 25. I rate him highly, and think that he has the world at his feet, as long as he cuts out the nonsense off the pitch.

The choice is his

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has been given legal permission to stay in a hotel with his team-mates as they prepare for Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby.

The player had been ordered to live at club captain Kevin Nolan's home in Northumberland, as part of his bail conditions for an alleged assault.

But Tynedale Magistrates agreed to allow him to move elsewhere, after hearing he had bought a new home.

Mr Carroll, 21, denied an assault charge at the court on 18 October.

After Sunday's match against Sunderland Mr Carroll must reside in his new home, which is currently being prepared, and must stay with his United team-mates in a hotel before matches when required by the club, the court in Hexham ruled.
