Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen has suffered a setback in his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury and will return to see a specialist.

The 24-year-old, who has been sidelined since picking up the problem playing for Belgium on 7 September, suffered a setback in training on Monday.

"On the scan, his Achilles is clear," Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said.

"But as soon as he stays out for a while, it tightens up and he has pain. We don't know the source of his pain."

A typical Arsenal injury.

When it happened we were told that he would be out for two weeks. That drifted out to one month. Now he has been out for two months and there is still no sign of a well needed return.
The other injury that concerns me is that of Abu Diaby. He had his ankle broken and discolated at Sunderland in 2006 by Dan Smith. He was out for over a year, and struggled to recapture his promising form. This season, the same ankle took a pounding for the clogger at Bolton, Paul Robinson. The same ankle was done by Essien versus Chelsea. Now his ankle has given up the ghost. The reports from the medical staff is that it is fucked, and no date has been put on a return, that is if he does make a return.
