Liverpool's new stadium could be named Carlsberg Anfield as the Reds' American owners desperately try to balance the books.

Carlsberg have enjoyed sponsorship of Liverpool for a record 18 years but appear ready to suggest a new agreement which would see their name emblazoned across the stadium.

"That will be part of the discussion, I'm sure, but there have been no decisions yet," Gareth Roberts, Carlsberg UK's director of sponsorship, told The Independent.

Arsenal sold the naming rights to their stadium to Emirates for ?100m over 13 years - including an eight-year shirt sponsorship deal - and those kind of figures are likely to persuade Tom Hicks and George Gillett to risk a fan backlash.

The pair are currently trying to negotiate the rescheduling of ?350m of loans they took to buy Liverpool, and Carlsberg will be watching closely before deciding whether to increase their sponsorship deal.

"We would be very interested in what happens. I'm sure that the conversations that go on between the two parties will reflect that," Roberts said.

If they want to sell the Anfield name all well and good, but I can't see the point in calling the new stadium 'Carlsberg Anfield' why not just 'The Carlsberg Arena' I'm sure that would be more lucrative, that just shoving the word Carlsberg in front of Anfield.  huh

Also agreed....Carlsberg Anfield doesn't have a good sound to it.

Mind you, if they did build stadiums.......they'd be the best stadiums in......ok i'll stop there Whistle

I think off the top of my head, only Millwall have kept the old name in the name of a new stadium, it's now called 'The New Den' as opposed to 'The Den'

Sunderland
Middlesborough
Southampton
Derby
Stoke
Coventry
Arsenal
Man City
Hull
Reading
Cardiff
Swansea
Doncaster
Leicester
Colchester

Have all had new stadia built in recent years, and all have not used the pld name in the new one  huh

If I aint mistaken, Shrewbury have moved from Gay Meadow  to the New Meadow. Does that count?

As for Carlsberg Anfield, Just doesnt sound right for me,

"It's about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It's about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it's about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. About Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could phone home"
